Aerthlan’s five Embraced queens have reigned for twenty years, in peace secured by the power of their magic. But now a new and insidious threat has appeared, to test a new generation.
DESIRE AND DECEPTION
All Princess Eviana needs is an escape. Possessed of an unfortunate and unusual Embraced gift, which she’s been banned from using, she required no training. Now, her overprotective parents want her to wed. As a result, the palace is crammed with obnoxious noblemen. . . . Until Quentin, the enigmatic eagle shifter and royal spy, maneuvers several of the unsuitable suitors into revealing their most embarrassing secrets before the court. Finally, Eviana has an excuse to free herself. If only her family knew the blow that’s shaken her: golden-eyed Quentin’s refusal to let her near . . .
Heroic, but low born, Quentin’s infatuation with Eviana is as inappropriate as it is unshakable. He must keep away from her, for his own sake. But after a series of suspicious deaths, and the princess’s narrow escape from kidnapping, Quentin knows that only together can they expose the danger stalking Aerthlan’s Embraced. On foot, in disguise, they’ll need trust and quick wits to uncover the vicious conspiracy closing around them. But finding the truth might break down their own defenses as well .
I love the diversity of the people of the Embraced series. There is a variety of types of magic and now we are something like 20+ years later with the next generation. The original folks are there in the background a bit with the younger generation stepping into the main roles.
The heroine is the daughter of Leo and Luciana of Eberton, Eviana. Quentin, the hero, is an orphan from the Isle of Secrets who helped with the original battle against the Circle of Five as a child. Eviana has been protected because of her gift, which is not known.
Now, after many years of peace and prosperity, there is a new threat, and the Embraced are being murdered. Eviana seems at the center of danger. Quentin who has fallen for the princess is very protective of her. Together, they hatch a plan to catch the murderers. The rest of their family takes up their roles providing cover and distractions. It’s thrilling to see them investigate and figure out who the culprits are. The whole group uses their unique skills to the best effect they can.
During the hunt, Evie and Quen grow to know and care for each other even more. A couple from Quen’s Isle of Secrets Days also travel with them and develop a renewed closeness. So there is plenty of romance in the air, along with the mystery of who is killing the Embraced. All those layers make for a fun and exciting story.

Quentin and Eviana sound like great characters…and I like that there’s so many different kinds of magic. 🙂
Yes this series is very creative with different kinds of magic and different shifters. But the theme is supporting the different, and the ordinary, treating the people kindly and the same no matter their differences.
Anne I love multi-generational series it’s so neat to see the kids grow up and the former adults get older. Thanks for sharing
It is a smart choice to continue the series. I love seeing the originals and now seeing their children as young and new adults.
I really enjoyed Quentin and Eviana’s story. I love all of the different abilities the various characters have. I am so glad that you enjoyed this one.
Thank you Carole. I’ve loved this series from the beginning. It’s very creative and uplifting in the values.
I don’t think I’ve ever tried her books yet but I heard a lot about them
I really enjoy them.
I’ve always wanted to try one of her books. Glad this series is still working for you.
You might really enjoy these. The characters are diverse and kind. The bad guys are all for power and do some horrible things but it’s mostly a fight for the everyman with kindness by the embraced and a romance in each story. I’d start with the original ones at the beginning.
Magic and romance are always a good match in my book! Lovely review Anne!
Thank you! This series is so interesting and uplifting.
I haven’t heard about this series before. I’ll definitely have to check this one out.
Great Review!
I love these but I would start at the beginning.
Beautiful cover! Not sure if it is a book I’d read, but great review!
I’d call them fantasy romance. I find them uplifting because of the diversity and emotional intelligence of the good guys; they are kind. There is a new couple in each book, and yet the series has longer political plot arcs in an urban fantasy style. The political plot arcs make it much more interesting than only a romantic plot.
