Miss Gwendolyn Brinley accepted a temporary paid companion position for the Newport summer season, believing it would be a lark to spend the summer in America's most exclusive town. She suddenly finds her summer turning anything but amusing when her employer expects her to take over responsibilities as an assistant matchmaker. Tasked with the daunting prospect of attaining advantageous matches for her clients, Gwendolyn soon finds herself in the company of Mr. Walter Townsend, the catch of the Season, but a gentleman Gwendolyn finds beyond annoying.

Walter is reluctantly in search of a wife for his unruly motherless children. What he wasn't expecting was Miss Brinley, who turns his quest for a new wife into a complete and utter debacle.

The more time they spend together throughout the Newport Season, the harder it is for Gwendolyn to find Walter a wife when she realizes his perfect match might be . . . her.

A Match in the Making is the first book in the new Matchmakers series.  Jen Turano is a new to me author and if the rest of her work is anything like this I will be working my way through her catalog soon.  The story was fun, the characters interesting and the plot engaging.  I had so much fun with everything about this story I found myself just randomly smiling while listening.

Gwendolyn is a bit unconventional for a lady and took a job as a paid companion for the summer.  She thought she was going to relax, attend a few parties and read for the summer.  But that all changed when the lady she was to be the companion to broke her leg and bumps Gwendolyn up from companion to Matchmaking assistant. Her tranquil and relaxing season has now turned into a series of luncheons, beach get togethers, balls and excursions as she tries to find the most eligible bachelor the right wife who might care for Walter and his three very unruly children.

Walter doesn’t really care if he falls in love.  His only requirement for a wife is that she will be a good mother for his children.  When that fact comes out in a conversation with Gwendolyn, he becomes inundated with all kinds of feminine attention as each woman tries in more elaborate and unusual ways to get close to Walter through any means necessary and if a black eye or a spilled drink on a dress just happens to happen, so be it.

I had so much fun with Gwendolyn and Walter as they conversed and antagonized each other.  Walter didn’t even know there could be a woman like Gwendolyn out there and I love the way she goes toe to toe with him.  The children aspect of the story ended up really working; they brought an extra bit of dimension and some very funny moments to the story.  Seeing Walter find a way to be a better father to them was one of my favorite aspects to the story.  It became more and more clear that Gwendolyn and Walter were made for each other and I was in a state of great anticipation wondering when they were going to figure that out for themselves.

There are so many great moments and fun characters in the book that I’m very interested to see what will happen in the next Matchmaking books.  Jen Turano really impressed me with her characters, fun moments and dialogue.  A great new to me author find.

Narration:

Sarah Zimmerman is a very accomplished narrator.  I think she has a voice that is made for Historical Romance and I enjoyed how she played the voices of all the characters.  While her performance of Gwendolyn was my favorite, all the characters were really good. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.
