Felicia, a single mother and lawyer by day, volunteers at a local crisis center to give back to her tightknit community in a small Wisconsin town. One night, a phone call turns her life upside down: through tears, a frantic teenage girl tells her that she was a victim of sexual assault at a local house party.
Felicia is shocked, and breaking protocol, she begins communicating with the girl on her own, determined to keep her safe and hold her assailants accountable. But she can’t shake the potential connections being drawn to her son, Hunter, who she knows attended the same party. Felicia and her only child, Hunter—a straight-A student and star athlete—are incredibly close. He couldn’t possibly be involved in such a violent crime.
Wow. There are lots of triggers in this story, if you need to know. One of Our Own was suspenseful. I can’t imagine trying to help a young girl who is so distraught she wants to kill herself. Especially when you have lost a sister to suicide. Felicia could really relate to the girl and did her best to help.
I really respect this mother who went through so much herself, worked to raise a good son and tried to help others. She tries to question her son about the party and the video but he shuts her out. They have always been able to talk so this worries her even more.
Eventually, as she continues to help the victim and learns more, Felicia has to face that her son might have been involved. Felicia was smart, kind and did the right thing no matter how much it hurt to consider that her son might be a criminal.
I highly recommend this emotional and difficult story for the issues it examines. The bias we have about criminals, victims and their families are explored. All the feelings are happening here.
Narration:
I had never heard these two narrators on an audiobook. They did a great job with the voices and they felt appropriate. The main narrator, AJ Cook, is one I enjoy from Criminal Minds but I didn’t recognize her unless I thought about it while listening. She was the character for me. I was able to listen at my normal 1.5x speed.

Sounds dark with all of those triggers.
It’s emotional but everything is after the fact so it isn’t very dark. It’s more inspiring and healing. It’s definitely one of my favorite books this year.
I thought this was well done for a novella! I have my review coming on Thursday.
