A murder in a crowd…with no witnesses.
An intruder on her ranch…and only the dogs know the identity.
Old faces and old cases return with shocking demands.
A fierce Thanksgiving day storm sends Maddie “Mad Girl” Whitney and the Midnight Runners K-9 Search and Rescue team racing to Deadman’s Mountain. They find the victim…
But that’s only the start of a season of high crimes and mystery.
Each new crisis leads Maddie and her partner Sheriff Oliver Desjardins back to Deadman’s, the rumored haunt of the Coyote Run Creeper. Soon, Maddie begins wondering if there’s any truth to the legend of a madman living on the mountain.
The Coyote Run series has been a huge home run with me. I love the dogs, of course, and the main character Maddie who is neurodivergent. Maddie studied criminology and is part of the local Search & Rescue teams so she often gets involved with mysteries and murders, and her partner is the local sheriff, Oliver. Maddie is also trying to have a relationship with her recently discovered biological dad, Abel.
In the last book, she helped with a big case to catch some dog fighting criminals. They were also involved in drugs. Oliver is very busy with that in this book. Kenzi has moved home and is living in their parents’ home again. Raymond has come to visit which upsets Maddie. She doesn’t believe Raymond has cleaned up his act.
Raymond is doing some survivalist type groups in the area and one of his participants goes missing. Maddie is on the search and of course, finds a dead body. The new development seems to be sprouting dead bodies. Maddie figures things out without much help.
There are a lot of plot threads in this story. There is Maddie’s relationship with Oliver. There is the grief from the loss of her grandfather which Maddie still feels. There are the murders, and an abandoned baby. Maddie spends time with Abel. Kenzi tries to get Maddie to accept Raymond. The veterinarian, Ben, is having issues with his wife wanting to live closer to her parents, so Maddie is afraid they will leave. It’s a huge, emotional pot churning inside me.
I really enjoyed the story. Maddie has a sometimes blunt, sometimes outlandish way of getting to the truth of things but she does. The ending was sad and left me wanting to Howl Like the Wind. I’m looking forward to the next book, hopefully soon.
Narration:
Cindy Kay does an excellent job with the narration. I really appreciate her distinct voices for the characters. I know I enjoyed the story more with her performance. I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.

I’ve never heard of this series, but it sounds awesome! And I really love that cover.
I love this series SO much. This is the third book and I would definitely start at the beginning. It’s in KU I think unless that’s changed this month.
Sounds like a series I’d enjoy. I like the search and rescue part and the fact that it has wonderful characters to root for.
I really love this series for its interesting characters and of course, the dogs.
Another series on my radar. So glad to see you are enjoying them.
I love this series. There is something about it. And the dogs.
I really like the sound of this series. I don’t love a sad ending but I like the sound of the main character and I do love a good mystery series.
I’m hoping the sad ending will be improved in the next book. Because I love this series and the dogs.
WOW! That sounds like a lot going on for one book. Glad you are enjoying the series.
yes I love so much about this series.
Glad you’re enjoying the series. The narrator doing all the voices well makes a big difference too.
It really does make a difference. I have some things I read because I can’t listen to the narration. Sometimes just because they changed narrator mid series and I keep hearing the original one in my head. Or sometimes series I started reading and I hear my own version of the voices then I can’t listen to audio. But I listen to many audiobooks and love them.
