A string of brutal murders is leaving a grisly trail across the Pacific Northwest—and drawing rising star FBI profiler Laurel Snow back into a treacherous case and a twisted personal drama she can’t escape . . .
The first body is torn apart, blood and flesh discovered across both state and federal lands. As the victims multiply, a pattern emerges—each is related to past cases investigated by Laurel Snow, with the assist of Huck Rivers, Washington Fish and Wildlife captain. When friends and loved ones are targeted, things become even more chillingly personal.
As Laurel and Huck team up again to navigate the gruesome and increasingly bizarre killings, they must also keep a safe distance from Laurel’s half-sister, Abigail, a dangerously clever sociopath. Ever since their father reappeared in town, Abigail has been convinced she must protect Laurel from his malignant narcissism—a scourge she’s sure they’ve both inherited. Huck is not spared either as a shocking development in the case touches his own life.
I was happy to continue the Laurel Snow series. I like Laurel and Huck. Abigail and Zeke are wacky characters, a bit cliche in their evil as malignant narcissists. We learn more about Laurel and Huck personally. It was especially great to get more of Huck’s history.
The murders and the capabilities of Jason Abbott and others to escape or continue to commit crimes seems a bit over the top. That Laurel and Monty would be short staffed and unable to gather other assistance seems unusual. Although sometimes help means they try to take over the case.
Laurel and Huck take many great steps in gathering evidence to solve the case. And I was so glad when they sent Laurel’s mother out of town. I am unhappy that both Huck and Laurel relied on their own skills and did not always have backup or support. They knew they were under fire, how serious it was, and yet did not secure protection or backup.
You Can Kill was easy to read and the culprits were not always clear. It was engaging even if it was over the top in a few aspects. The ending had things in a good place.
Narration:
I’m very comfortable with Amy Landon as the narrator for this series. She provided some distinct voices for Laurel and the other characters with emotional or logical tones as appropriate. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.
