While tracking down an escaped felon, FBI Special Agent Evan McGarry and his K-9, Blue, uncover a smoking hot lead on the location of dozens of missing children—including Evan’s own sister. The shocking discovery reopens cold cases throughout Colorado, along with painful wounds and the heartbreaking guilt Evan’s kept buried for decades.
Three years ago, hospital custodian Marlie Foxe’s world imploded, causing her to cut herself off from the world. But when one of the missing boys turns up at her hospital, he only allows Marlie to get close. Now, Evan needs her help—and he won’t take no for an answer. When she finally agrees to work with him, Evan suspects there’s more to the woman than she’s letting on. She’s hiding something. The question is, what.
The K-9 Special Ops series is one where each book has a federal officer and his dog. They are friends through K9 training and connections. Evan is an officer in the CARD unit that deals with missing children. He has lots of experience and devotes his life to his work. He lost his twin sister as a child twenty some years ago.
He’s chasing down a possible trafficker in children and in his house finds a boy. There are also photos of other children. The boy, Noah, goes to the hospital where he is befriended by a custodian, who actually is a trained child psychologist. Marlie left her work and divorced after her own son was abducted and killed. She’s just been getting by, too overcome with grief to do anything with her life. All of them are caring, compassionate people and put aside their personal issues to try to help these children.
But Marlie feels protective of Noah since he has been through a lot. She qualifies as a foster mom for him and together they end up working with Evan to track down the other children. Noah provides clues as to where the he was before he ran away and the other children might be there.
Evan, Marlie and Noah all have their secrets and vulnerabilities but as they work together to find the other children, they build their own relationship. It’s a scary, tense time to find those children. Thankfully, this is a romance with a happy ending. I found Ultimate Justice to be very well done and enjoyed the fast pace and tension of the storyline.
Narration:
The narrator has been performing all the books in this series and the previous connected Federal K-9 series. Vanessa Daniels has uses appropriate differences in male, female and child voices. I enjoyed her performance. I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.

I keep seeing these…..one day.
I love them. Just a nice blend of dogs, police procedural and romance.
Great review. I’ve been enjoying this series too.
Thank you! I might enjoy it with a little more dog participation but I thought the balance of romance to the plot was pretty good.
Love that Noah finds two champions in them. This series has great appeal each time I see your reviews for the books. 🙂
These are definitely ones I don’t hesitate to read. They have more romance than some series, but similar to some other series. I’m most interested in the dogs and mystery with a romance background plot.
The stories with human trafficking break my heart! Especially because it happens a lot in real life. These predators are awful! I’m happy to hear there was a happy ending!
I think it is heartbreaking and it seems far removed from my life but I’m sure it is out there a lot.
I enjoyed this one as well. I think my review posts next week. Agreed, it was intense with the children.
I always enjoy these although they feel a little outside reality. But there are many jobs that are outside my reality so that isn’t a criticism. I like how the romance was there but mostly background for the start.
I love mysteries and romances that involve K-9s! 😀
Me too! It’s easier to pick up a book with a K9 than any other. Except Ilona Andrews.
