Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy’s marriage proposal comes as a shock to Miss Elizabeth Bennet. Despite the temptation to rail at him for his past injustices, she restrains herself and declines his offer with civility.

Following a heartfelt and enlightening discussion with the perplexing gentleman, Elizabeth is persuaded to judge him anew and allows him to call upon her in London. As her understanding of Darcy’s nature improves, so does her regard for him.

But Darcy’s aunt Lady Catherine confronts Elizabeth with a startling her ladyship maintains she has the means to take Pemberley away from Darcy. Could this outrageous assertion be true?

Mr. Darcy’s Complex Courtship offers a suspenseful variation historical romance set in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice world.  Kelly Miller has long enchanted me with her writing that uniquely approaches Jane Austen’s most popular tale with genre blends that include fantasy, romance, suspense, and mystery.  Her latest offers a tough-fought, drama-laden romance with a hint of suspense.

Mr. Darcy’s Complex Courtship begins with a disastrous marriage proposal when Mr. Darcy finds himself rejected by the woman he hoped to make his wife.  In the original, Elizabeth’s refusal was scathing and shutdown any chance the pair had of getting past misunderstanding and another’s mischief, but this time, Elizabeth reins in her temper and is polite.  This changes the course of the pair’s future because it allows Darcy to learn why he is rejected and for Elizabeth to learn she misjudged the man, terribly.

Their courtship seems to be progressing well when they are in London, but then their own relations sabotage their happiness.  Elizabeth’s father won’t allow the pair to openly be engaged and Darcy’s aunt warns off Elizabeth with a threat about a Darcy family secret that would destroy everything Darcy holds dear.

Mr. Darcy’s Complex Courtship seemed to be smooth sailing when all of a sudden this changes and storm after storm hit this pair.  The second half of the book was one conflict after another they had to resolve.  I wouldn’t have minded so much with the plotting against them and them having to face the trouble, but at a point, it felt too much.  For one, I wasn’t pleased with how the pair responded when they were separated and started doubting the depth of each other’s resolve and feelings in a way that didn’t match their own usually strong characters.  However, I did like seeing them fight on and work through all that got tossed at them.  Interesting surprise that was the big Darcy secret.  Kelly Miller has a gift bringing the intrigue into her romances in a way that creates a fun ‘aha’ moment late in the story.

All in all, I was left satisfied after a well-fought romance for a pair who had to face interior doubt and exterior conflict to find their way to happy.  Kelly Miller has a unique twist with each new release.  Sweet historical romance fans who like a moderate amount of angst are the target crowd for this one.

    • Probably, since it starts at the big blow up scene. But I think this one going off in an all new direction from nearly the beginning of this book opens it to anyone who wants a suspenseful sweet historical, too.
