I thought I understood power.

My parents taught me that magic attracts equal danger, and everything I've seen since becoming a demon contractor confirms it. I've witnessed how power twists and corrupts--and I've tasted power no human should wield.

I thought I knew greed.

Ambition and avarice drove my family into hiding. My parents died for someone else's greed. I've never hunted anything in my life, but now I'm hunting their killer--with my demon's help.

I thought I'd seen evil.

But with each step closer to my parents' murderer, I'm uncovering a different sort of evil, piece by hidden piece. I've stumbled into an insidious web that silently, secretly ensnares everything it touches. My demon and I came as the hunters...

...but I think we might be the prey.

Hunting Fiends for the Ill-Equipped was an outstanding installment in the Guild Codex: Demonized series. It fits so well within the overlapping series in the Guild Codex universe, furthering the plot for Robin and her gang and the overarching plot of the combined books.

This installment showcases the strengthening dynamics between Robin, Zylas, and Amalia. They work well together, have trust between them. Wondering if Zylas has the soft core — at least where she is concerned — that Robin has been hoping for, as well as having a sideline seat to the burgeoning feelings between Robin and her demon kept me glued to the pages. Robin’s relationship with certain guild members was also fortified and that was a pleasure to see. She needs people in her corner and who better than her guild?

We witness a scene from Tori’s book, Druid Vices and a Vodka, from Robin’s POV and I appreciated getting to watch those events from a different lens. Especially considering how it changed dynamics and perspectives between Robin and other guild members. Not to mention it was super tense and exciting. Getting to see Robin and Ezra work together and bond was also appreciated.

We also get cameos from Kit and Lienna from the Warped series. The antics and interactions between these two characters were spot on and entertaining. I liked how their presence helped tie together the three Guild Codex series as well as further the overarching plot.

Hunting Fiends for the Ill-Equipped was action-packed and illuminating. I finished in record time because I didn’t want to put it down. It furthered the plot for Robin and her gang as well as for the combined Guild Codex series. Annette Marie has done a phenomenal job at overlapping these books, these characters, meshing their plots together, making for a stellar story overall.

I highly recommend these series in written format as well as audio. Cris Dukehart does an incredible job with all the series and characters.

Who said                              “You showed up out of nowhere, joined the Grand Grimoire, went all John Wick on an unbound demon a few days later, then switched guilds and disappeared. You didn’t think MagicPol might notice that, just a little bit?”

Who said  “Don’t ever engage in combat while in the nude, Better to ruin clothes than ruin body parts.”  in Druid Vices and a Vodka is Kai.

The villain was Varvera.

Quotes you readers shared from Druid Vices and a Vodka:

“I’d spent half my life molding myself into the most independent person I could be—a woman who didn’t need anyone to take care of her—but somewhere along this crazy mythic road with the guys, I’d learned that it was okay to be weak and scared. Sometimes, it was okay to let someone you trusted shield you.”

“Seriously? He’d just invaded my guild, demanded my phone number, flaunted his edgy man-beauty everywhere, and now he was leaving without another word? Did he want to make his visit as memorable as possible?”

“I mean, if you’ve never broken a mythic’s face with an umbrella, are you even living?”

“Or a glove? A sock? The only other ‘wearable’ thing I can think of that would fold up this small are panties.” I shot him an arch look. “That’s why you aren’t using this artifact right now, isn’t it? You don’t want to wear the Invincibility Panties.”

“Was avenging lives already gone worth destroying the ones still left?”

“When someone butts in on you and starts asking questions you’d rather not answer, ‘get the hell out, you nosy asshat’ is a good response. You should try it.”

“Wait!” I darted back, snatched up the guy’s food bag, and tucked it beside his limp arm. Rushing to Kai, I whispered, “He deserves his burger after all that.” Kai’s silent pause was full of commentary he didn’t say aloud.”

About Annette Marie

Annette Marie is the author of YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast-paced urban fantasy, bold heroines, and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She proudly admits she has a thing for dragons, and her editor has politely inquired as to whether she intends to include them in every single book.

Annette lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad). She shares her life with her remarkably patient, comparatively sensible husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

About Brandee at (Un)conventional Bookworms

Brandee is a wife and mom of 3. She’s also an avid reader, a genre omnivore, and a recovering one-click addict. On the list of things that keep her busy, she hikes, knits, and writes. She plans to publish her first book later this year.
