On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport. Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer, who is flying East for her much anticipated wedding. Dr. Ben Payne has just wrapped up a medical conference and is also eager to get back East for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day. When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken de-icer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection. And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley knowing that she needs to get back just as urgently. And then the unthinkable happens. The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness-- one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Ben, who has broken ribs and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly harrowing battle to survive. Fortunately, Ben is a medical professional and avid climber (and in a lucky break, has his gear from a climb earlier in the week). With little hope for rescue, he must nurse Ashley back to health and figure out how they are going to get off the mountain, where the temperature hovers in the teens. Meanwhile, Ashley soon realizes that the very private Ben has some serious emotional wounds to heal as well. He explains to Ashley that he is separated from his beloved wife, but in a long standing tradition, he faithfully records messages for her on his voice recorder reflecting on their love affair. As Ashley eavesdrops on Ben's tender words to his estranged wife she comes to fear that when it comes to her own love story, she's just settling. And what's more: she begins to realize that the man she is really attracted to, the man she may love, is Ben.

As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival become increasingly perilous. How will they make it out of the wilderness and if they do, how will this experience change them forever?

Both a tender and page-turning read, The Mountain Between Us will reaffirm your belief in the power of love to sustain us.

Icon TOP READ

So I only knew about THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US, and only read it, because I heard Charlie Hunnam would be playing the male lead in the movie. It is to be filmed this year but I don’t know when it will be released. But if he was going to play it, I had to read it. This is a work of fiction, not a true story.

THANK EVERYTHING and EVERYONE he didn’t go through with Fifty Shades of Grey. I would have had to read it.

Even so, I got the book and had trouble getting myself to start it. Why? I’ve seen nearly all of his movies. I’ve also watched his favorite (reported) films. And they are dark, depressing and he usually dies. I knew this book had a plane crash and a fight for survival.

I need some things from my books. I need to escape the world. I need to learn things, be challenged, grow my spirit, be uplifted, love and laugh. His sort of movies aren’t that way, usually. So I started reading after a very good, successful day, gathering my fortitude, and shielded myself with that success. … But this book was everything I need.

There is a plane crash and it is a story of survival. I enjoyed the intellectual and emotional details and the fight to survive. I love MacGyver and the skills of using what you have. It is also a story of a man, the memories of his loved ones and how he has lived his life. That emotional journey is the heart of the story. His life against the backdrop of probable death.

I’ll be very excited to see the film and how they give us the window to his past. Flashbacks, narration or what. This is a story which deserves to be told and I hope Charlie chooses more like this one.

THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US is an amazing story, filling my head and heart. And make no mistake, it is a love story.

There was an update this week. The Mountain Between Us (movie) is scheduled for a February 10, 2017 release.

  2. I love Top reads, those go automatically on my waiting for audio list, or wish list if already out. This isn’t my normal kind of listen, but since I find myself forwarding a lot sex scenes a of lately I thought I needed to get out of my romance box a little more often, and suspense is great on audio 🙂
    Thank you Anna!

    • I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It is amazing and real. And you’re right, it is much more a suspense / action story than a romance.

    • There’s no supernatural characters here, but there is a mountain lion. 🙂 It’s gritty and real and so are their feelings. There are some unexpected things and the way they handle them just makes it better.

We don’t always have the same taste Carmen, at least you don’t like some of the fluffy I do (Ghost Seer), but I think you love the gritty / different (Written in Red) which I do.

Your review of this wonderful book is spot on!!!…I too read the book after learning Charlie Hunnam is attached to and set to star in the movie…

The physical and mental strength of both characters is amazing, making this a thriller and page turner throughout…

It’s a beautiful love story from so many aspects…

    • PT Ice Baby,

I’m glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. You really are correct about the physical and mental strength of the characters, that is one of the best things. The characters are so admirable. It’s suspense with a subtle love story in the background.
