Never judge a book by its cover...
Due to her involvement in an unfortunate set of mishaps between the dragons and the Fae, Librarian spy Irene is stuck on probation, doing what should be simple fetch-and-retrieve projects for the mysterious Library. But trouble has a tendency of finding both Irene and her apprentice, Kai—a dragon prince—and, before they know it, they are entangled in more danger than they can handle...
Irene’s longtime nemesis, Alberich, has once again been making waves across multiple worlds, and, this time, his goals are much larger than obtaining a single book or wreaking vengeance upon a single Librarian. He aims to destroy the entire Library—and make sure Irene goes down with it.
With so much at stake, Irene will need every tool at her disposal to stay alive. But even as she draws her allies close around her, the greatest danger might be lurking from somewhere close—someone she never expected to betray her...
This was fun and easily kept me reading. The Burning Page is the third in The Invisible Library series. Each story was consistently good with interesting adventures and characters. Somehow the overall feeling was different in each. The Invisible Library (book 1) had its world-building and introduction to characters we would know and come to love. The Masked City took us on a wild adventure beyond our Irene, Kai and Vale’s experience. That is part of their world; they travel to different times and places with varying levels of order and chaos. The Library, seems to try to hold the status quo, so the world has a balance somewhere in the middle.
The Library, even with Irene working there for a time, is still quite the mystery. The politics and function are not clear. There are also challenges to its purpose and continuance. Has The Library, perhaps wrongly, kept information from worlds and people? The fae and the dragons have their own battles but this is in the background here.
And there is more to learn about Irene. Why do we know so little of her family? Here, she was in the forefront using her abilities. I loved her perspective and bold handling of the situations. Irene was smart, thoughtful, compassionate and organized while dealing with vague facts and life-threatening crises. Her kick-ass defeat of any and all comers appealed to me more than having her rescued by the guys. She did work as a team with Kai and Vale but Irene was in charge.
I can’t wait to see what happens, with at least two more books in the series, and learn more! I feel the characters now, whether it be their triumphs, puzzlement, sorrows or jokes. Next up is The Lost Plot, unfortunately, about a year away.
Giggle-worthy quote:
“Honesty was most unhelpful; it got in the way of a satisfying whine of complaint at their over-protectiveness and made her feel like the one at fault.”
