Lexi didn’t set out to steal a god’s ring, but when a magic artifact starts trying to talk to you, what’s a girl supposed to do? She’s always had the ability to talk to animals, but this new development amps up the crazy. Now she’s afraid her power is out of control and she’s losing her mind.

The only person who could possibly reassure her that she’s not going mad is her mother, who has always refused to discuss the source of Lexi’s strange ability. Now that the jewelery is getting chatty, maybe she’ll finally spill the beans.

Unfortunately, going home means a trip back to the human territories, and Lexi only just made it out of there alive last time. She’s hoping for a quick visit, but with a god hellbent on retrieving the ring and a fireshaper she might have accidentally betrayed on her tail, life is about to get horribly complicated—for her and everyone she cares about.

The first book in Shadows of the Immortals series. was Stolen Magic and I chose it on a whim. It was such a pleasant surprise I asked if there would be more and Tantor was kind enough to send along the next one for me!!!

Hollie Jackson was very enjoyable and the voices were distinguishable for the characters. I learned recently I could change speed on audio books. This could not be at any faster speed or it sounded too squeaky like when people do those helium balloon voices.

The beginning was rather frustrating because Lexi was trying to figure things out about herself and the world. It didn’t go very quickly or very well. She couldn’t even decide who were the good guys and who were the bad guys! (I knew.)  It was better after she knew which side she chose. Typical to Urban Fantasy, the romance aspects are minimal.

One small quibble, it’s a “show me” instead of “tell me” issue. When Lexi decides who the good guys are, she shares all her information. We learn this in about two sentences which say she tells them the whole story. I would have liked to have been shown that, the dialogue, the way she tells them, what she actually tells them and their reactions. Also, does she share her questions about things in her history and can they add any information? Obviously not, since it is stated she just tells them. But it would be more realistic to be shown and for them to add some small bits of information to the world building.

These are rather short audios and I sort of wish it was in one or two instead of three books. There were still several open issues at the end. This is a natural stopping point but the story is hardly finished. I look forward to the Rivers of Hell sometime this month.  The books are all published previously. They don’t seem to be at any of my libraries but they are available in Kindle Unlimited. I am attached to this quirky world and its characters!
