With a killer on the loose, it's the worst time to be on lockdown…
It's just another day at the office for Washington Metro Police lieutenant Sam Holland when a body surfaces off the shores of the Anacostia River. But before Sam can sink her teeth into the new case, Secret Service agents seize her from the crime scene. A threat has been made against her family, but nobody will tell her anything—including the whereabouts of her husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano.
This isn't the first time the couple's lives have been at risk, but when a bombshell from Sam's past returns to haunt her, she can't help but wonder if there's a connection. With a ruthless killer out for vengeance, and Nick struggling to maintain his reputation after secrets from his own past are revealed, Sam struggles to tie the threat to a murder that can't possibly be a coincidence. And she has to get it done before her husband's career is irrevocably damaged…
I have read ebooks for the entire Fatal series until now. I LOVE this series and these characters. I am absorbed into many of the overall plots which carry through multiple books. I love how Samantha is strong and smart; she cares for her team and for the victims of the crimes. The humor in her banter with her co-workers is fun. Nick is smart and caring. He has such compassion for others. Others like Scotty, Shelby, Skip, Celia, Samantha’s siblings, their families and her team, are all well developed and dear.
Fatal Threat, as makes sense, starts with a threat to Nick’s family while he is out of country. Sam did not handle this situation well. I did not enjoy her trademark “I can take care of myself” attitude where she doesn’t need protection. Overall, with things being so personal, I didn’t find it believable to have her involved as she was.
The blows kept coming, which is also normal for them with old enemies trying to cause trouble and get revenge. The subplot with Shelby and Avery was completely irritating and felt unnecessary. The homicide at the beginning and missing girls was another distraction which while probably typical to real life didn’t add much.
This was my first venture into audio for this series. It was clear to understand and well paced. I didn’t need to increase the speed. Eva Kaminsky captured the characters and their personalities. I felt their emotions whether joy or upset or confusion. I would be happy to listen to the audio version for other books in the series.
There was so much happening and many plots and sub plots. Normally, I find it adds layers and more reality to a story, making it enjoyable. It didn’t work for me as well here. Regardless, I wouldn’t miss a single book in the Fatal series. I look forward to Fatal Chaos to be available March 1, 2018.
