When bounty hunter Liam Quinn discovered that Claire Connolly was a Sensitive and infected with magic, he should have turned her in to be locked up in the prison district known as Devil's Isle. Instead, he helped her learn to control her power and introduced her to an underground group of Paranormals and humans who know the truth about the war and those who fought it.
Now the weight of Liam's own secrets has forced him into hiding. When a government agent is killed and Claire discovers that Liam is the prime suspect, she races to find him before the government can. But she'll discover proving his innocence is no simple matter. Their enemies are drawing closer, and time is running out .
I love this author and I have loved this Devil’s Isle series from the start. Somehow, this is an audio series for me. The world and the character of Claire are something special. Claire is mature; she’s had to be, since she is on her own. Her skills and practical nature reflect her upbringing. In The Hunt, she learns much more about her family history as she works to help all the people in New Orleans, with or without magic. She grows in her magic skills, and deals with new information. Even though she is a target, and more isolated with hiding, because of her magic, she makes a stand for what is right.
At the end of The Sight, Liam leaves. For the first half of The Hunt, he is not present. Even when he is on page, he holds himself emotionally distant. Claire dislikes his absence and is uncomfortable with him. I feel Claire’s mixed emotions. So I didn’t like his being gone and it made me uncomfortable. I didn’t feel Liam very well this time. The reaction of others to his leaving with regards to Claire, is a bit much. Gavin is more involved with everything and kept me laughing. He feels like Face from the A-team.
Amy Landon does a magnificent job. She is Claire and I love listening to her. Her performance brings everything to life in my mind. I like her vocals for Gavin, Moses and Gunnar, especially. Liam doesn’t sound the same but perhaps it is all part of the distance he is keeping.
Until the last third of the story, it felt like lots of disorganized bits of information and limited progress on anything. Then everything takes off, with hard and fast action to the end. Only, it’s obviously not the end. It’s not quite a cliffhanger, but things are drastically changed and the future is unclear. I despair as it is likely a year until the next book.

i haven’t read any books in this series yet
jodi – well you have a treat in store. It’s lovely to listen to the audiobooks or to read them.
I received the audio after the ebook and couldn’t wait to get started, so I’m reading the ebook. I’m nearing the end so all is starting to come together. Liam really needed a swift kick in the pants and I was glad that everyone saw what he did to Claire was wrong and at least mentioned it to him.
tanya davis – I don’t know it felt like too much with all of them mentioning. I didn’t think everyone realized their relationship since it was so new. But since they are older, not teens or college age, they are mature enough to make their own decisions. Of course, when they make bad ones, close friends may be ore likely to call them on it.
Love Chloe Neill:)
Same! Fell in love with the Chicagoland Vampires Series and am hooked on the Devil’s Isles as well!!!
carly cogburn and stephanie f – Me too!
Yes! I have read all of the Merit series and loved it! I have read the first two books in the Devil’s Isle.
maria – then you are all set to start The Hunt. Enjoy!
I haven’t read this one, but I read her other YA series and her Chicagoland Vampire series.
acm You should try this series, it’s great. How is the YA? I don’t read much YA but because I like this author I’ll probably get to it eventually.
I have read the Chicagoland series and have started reading the Devil Isle series, really enjoy her books
jeanmp
I really enjoy them also.
I haven’t read this series yet, but I have read and loved the Chicagoland Vampires series.
pam – I love both. This series is special somehow set in NOLA and Claire being more mature. I started this series at the library and ended up buying everything.
Good to know that it gets rolling slower than you anticipated. I haven’t started this series yet, but I plan to hit it eventually.
sophia rose – I think the first 2 were more consistently moving (action) This felt slower at the beginning but when it got going it moved. I love this series.
never read this author
bn100- if you like urban fantasy, I think her series are some of the best. My favorites anyway.
Good to know about the absence of Liam, I always find it a little odd when the main love interest has an extended absence, especially in the middle of a series. Guess I’ll have to wait and see how it’s handled.
maureen – It definitely made the beginning feel disjointed or disconnected more from emotions. It had a real impact and it did come together later in the book.
Good review, Anne! I was disappointed with this one. I missed the camaraderie of the first two books – this one felt like they were moving from action to action w/out much else. I also felt the author did a horrible job with Laura – the character was one-dimensional and added very little to the storyline. It could have been so much more emotionally satisfying if she’d fleshed out that character.
twimom227 – thank you! You hit the nail on the head about action to action without the emotion of the camaraderie we saw in the first 2 books. Both that and the characterization of Laura gave us some lack of feelings or emotions which was hard. Maybe that impact was planned / important for the impact? I didn’t like it with Liam as it seemed to affect Claire’s connection with everyone else. But with Laura, I felt it was right; the insane focus of Laura helped Claire move on to accept how things were and are.
I loved the Chicagoland Vampire series, I’m nearly done with it. I need to read the second (and obviously the third 😉 ) Devil’s Isle books but I’m looking forward to them!
danielle – Enjoy! They are some of the very best
I’ve read the Chicagoland Vampires series & the first two books in this series. Love them!
jama – I know I wrote a comment here a couple days ago and must not have hit reply. UGH. Anyway, I’m glad you have loved them as I have.
Haven’t read this series yet, but loved the Chicagoland Vampires so much! The audiobooks were fantastic!!!!
suzanne – I have really loved the audiobooks for both series, very much! Initially, the narrator change in the Chicagoland series threw me but I cam around
I LOVE her Chicagoland Vamp series…I have yet to start this series but I am positive she can’t write anything bad, so I can’t wait to start it!
april – the series are different. I think I prefer the Devil’s Isle perhaps. It seems more complex somehow. But I love them both
I’ve read the first two books in The Devils Isle series, really looking forward to The Hunt. And I’ve also read the first book in the Chicagoland Vampires series this summer.
snowlark2 – you have plenty of great reading or listening ahead!
Yes, I’ve read all of the Chicagoland Vampire series + all of Devil’s Isle series thus far.
