Marshall Hail was a husband, a father, a Physics Nobel prize winner and industrial billionaire. But when Hail's family was killed in a terrorist attack, he became a predator and redirected his vast industrial assets toward one goal, removing every person on the FBI's Top 10 Terrorist list. With the help of his MIT colleagues, Hail designed and built a devastating arsenal of attack drones of all shapes and sizes that are flown by the nation's best young gamers. The world will come to realize that Marshall Hail possesses the capability of getting to anyone, anywhere, at any time, unleashing an operation so disturbing that the CIA has named it Operation Hail Storm.

I think this came my way through one of those giveaways where you end up signed up for the author’s newsletter. Anyway, I try to filter them the same way I do all my other reading / listening  options as whether they sound interesting. I did really enjoy Operation Hail Storm, but I suspect it depends on your interests.

I am nerdy so I loved all the technical details and military battle aspects. Some might find it tedious, as it was extensive. Was it accurate?  No idea and it doesn’t matter to me. It opened my mind to possibilities and left my imagination to go. For me, this was more a “brain” book than a “heart” book. It did give me feelings but my brain was in charge most of the time. The world-building was excellent for me.

The characters, other than the Marshall and Kara, and perhaps the villain, were quite brief and not as substantial. Overall, I prefer more character development. I liked these characters though, good and bad. They were not just one thing, more gray, which means they were much more realistic.

The narration was my first experience with Michael Ashcraft. I liked the style and voice he gave to the characters. I felt he handled male and female characters well, and a clear voice which did not take me out of the story. I did listen at 1.25 and maybe 1.5 would have been better.

This is the start of the Hail series,  with the second book, Hail Warning, just released at the end of November. The ending here had a bit of a twist, and I’d like to go on with the series. I love the technical talk, the suspense and planning of the technical missions and the politics of the world.
