After an injury ends Travis Ford’s major league baseball career, he returns home to start over. He just wants to hammer out his frustrations at his new construction gig and forget all about his glory days. But he can’t even walk through town without someone recapping his greatest hits. Or making a joke about his… bat. And then there’s Georgie, his buddy’s little sister, who is definitely not a kid anymore.
Georgette Castle has crushed on her older brother’s best friend for years. The grumpy, bear of a man working for her family’s house flipping business is a far cry from the charming sports star she used to know. But a moody scowl doesn’t scare her and Georgie’s determined to show Travis he’s more than a pretty face and a batting average, even if it means putting her feelings aside to be “just friends.”
Travis wants to brood in peace. But the girl he used to tease is now a funny, full-of-life woman who makes him feel whole again. And he wants her. So damn bad. Except Georgie’s off limits and he knows he can’t give her what she deserves. But she’s becoming the air he breathes and Travis can’t stay away, no matter how hard he tries.
I saw Fix Her Up around on the Internet and decided I needed to listen to it. Both Travis and Georgie are caught in stereotypes which aren’t all that fitting or flattering to them. It’s hurtful and is affecting their careers. I enjoyed the cute and snarky dialogue between them. There are a couple tropes involved. Georgie is Travis’ best friend’s little sister. But I love the fake relationship the best.
Neither Travis or Georgie has had a long term relationship. The fake relationship gives them a chance to try on a relationship for size and work at making it function. I love the way they really listen to each other, help each other and support each others goals and feelings. They started already knowing each other a bit from childhood, so it’s more realistic.
Both of them need to work to be seen as who they are. Travis has more baggage of being mistreated, as a child and as an adult. He’s in the familiar mode of not letting anyone close so he doesn’t get hurt. Georgie is a whirlwind who doesn’t really take no for an answer. But she is kind and compassionate. Travis genuinely wants to see Georgie happy; he just doesn’t believe he can give her what she wants.
I really loved this and can’t wait to see what happens next in the Hot and Hammered series. It look like Love Her or Lose Her is up next year, featuring Rosie and Dominic who we meet briefly here.
Narration:
I don’t believe I have listened to Charlotte North before now. I enjoyed her voices for both the male and female characters, which primarily are Georgie and Travis. I loved the husky tone for Travis. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

Oh yes I heard good things about this one and I think I should try as well
It was very fun.
This does sound cute, but not shallow. I need to give it a try, too. Not listened to Charlotte North, either.
They had a few serious issues which not everyone reacted well – human beings – but worked out over time.
I have this one on my TBR! I love fake relationships that develop into something more! It sounds like this one is really well-written and compelling. I also like that they’ve known each other previously, because that adds another layer to their overall relationship.
Lindsi @ Do You Dog-ear? ?
Exactly – well said. They have known each other a long time – he’s her brother’s best friend. Fake relationship is my favorite. I like a bit of humor too.
Humorous fake relationships are the best!
i chuckled when i read hot and hammered
It has humor which adds a lot to most stories.
The book title and the series title cracked me up. This sounds like fun!
Very much fun! A great read in this genre.
I totally love the broken man you can fix trope like this seems to have. Great review Anne.
Well yes that is a THIRD trope here. I just love the fake fiance. It always cracks me up.
Hmm. I’m not sure if I’ve listened to this author before either although the name is familiar. I’ve seen this one all over the place and wondered about it. I’m glad you loved it and can’t wait for more.
Yes I really enjoyed the characters, their development and the humor.
