Sexy-as-sin Police Chief Mike Flannery knows the new arrival to Hopewell Springs is trouble. She has a smoking-hot body and a quick wit…and he’ll be damned if that’s not a turn-on. But this former NYPD cop and small-town heartthrob has been burned before, and there’s no way he’ll let that happen again.

New York City Detective Cassie Yates is on the run. A six-month undercover sting in a sleazy bar seemed like a textbook arrest—but now there’s a hit out on her. Armed with fake ID, her K-9 companion, and a police-issued SUV, she flees to a quiet upstate town where she trades her badge and gun for a spatula, finally finding peace in the dream she tossed aside to follow her family into law enforcement.

There’s no denying the fire and ice between them. But as the hired assassin closes in, Mike’s past comes roaring back and secrets are revealed in an explosion destined to tear them apart—if not destroy them.

Burnout was fun for so many reasons. First, there was the police work and the mystery to solve.  Next, there was the great small town, its people, and the cooking and food! Last but not least, there were serious sexy times.

This great listen had plenty of heartfelt moments with Cassie and Mike both having their own emotional journeys. Cassie is tired of the tense, isolated life of being undercover and now there’s a hit out on her.  She finds a small town with wonderful people to hide out and use her culinary education as she always wanted.

Mike has trust issues and seriously plans to never get involved with anyone after being burned in an undercover operation in his past.  He’s a really good cop and has done well in his small town home the past 6 years after leaving the NYPD.

There were a few things which seemed unrealistic as can happen with fiction, but overall it felt authentic.  There are both good and bad people and they seem to be starkly one or the other these days. Mostly the main characters showed some shades of gray.

The action was fast paced and there was real danger. I would have enjoyed a bit more of a K9 role. While there was a K9 dog, it played no part beyond what a pet might and even then was very limited.

I’m really looking forward to the rest of this NYPD Blue & Gold series. The next book is about Cassie’s brother, Gray, and the third, about her partner Dom.   Both are a small part here.

Narration:

I enjoyed this performance as the voices all seemed right to me.  The guys even seemed to have a bit of the NY accents although Cassie didn’t.  I don’t think I have heard this narrator before but I liked her. I was comfortable listening at my normal 1.5x speed.

    • Thank you. I liked it. There wasn’t much “police” work to it since she was hiding out and not working on the case at all. The next 2 in the series will be more police oriented I think. I found this author because of her K9 series which was also great.
