A deadly serious affair…

The story breaks as Metro PD lieutenant Sam Holland attends a dinner party with her husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano: President Nelson is accused of having an affair. More shocking still, campaign staffer Tara Weber claims the president fathered her newborn son—while the First Lady was undergoing secret cancer treatment.

When a high-profile murder case hits Sam’s desk, she’s shocked to uncover a connection to the presidential scandal. With the department caught up in its own internal scandals, and the chief’s job hanging by a thread, Sam questions who she can trust as her team uncovers information that clouds an already-murky case. And with calls for the president to resign getting louder by the minute, Sam needs to close this case before she finds herself living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue…

The Fatal series is one of the best in the romantic suspense genre, with the same couple throughout all the books.  I love the various characters who have been developed in their circle of family and friends.  The point of view is primarily Sam’s, who is a homicide lieutenant in Washington DC.  Her father used to be Chief Deputy but was shot four years ago and died two weeks prior to Fatal Accusation.

I don’t think this is the best place to start this series. There are various scenes which are following up on the cases of her father’s shooting and also her own kidnapping.  And there’s no reason not to enjoy the whole series!

The new case is a political hot potato as it involves the murder of a woman who had an affair with the President. I continue to feel slight disconnection to Nick as we rarely get his thoughts, more his dialogue.

Sam works the case to track down who murdered this woman. In spite of the victim’s various poor decisions, she didn’t deserve to be murdered.  I love Sam’s instincts and skills in interviewing witnesses and following evidence to leads. Nick is an amazing husband and support; her children are precious.

Internal scandals and issues within the department continue and there is likely more on tap for the future.  Sam also gets the go ahead to start her survivor grief support group, which is a worthy project.  And there is always the possibility Nick will end up as President. Someday.

Narration:

Eva Kaminsky feels natural to me as Sam, capturing her emotions and humor well.  Her male voices were unusual, almost softer or higher than the females.  The characters do have distinct voices. I do really enjoy listening to the series on audio. I was able to listen comfortably at my usual 1.5x speed.

  1. I keep seeing your reviews for this series over the years and think I’d like them, but haven’t gotten around to reading/listening yet. Interesting elements going on.

    • Yes I like that it is contemporary but follows the same couple. I don’t know of many which do either. There’s UF but those all have paranormal aspects. In Death series by JD Robb does but it is set in the future so is it UF or scifi? It is also romantic suspense but not contemporary current time period. I love that series though.
