This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre.
The genre here, by my definition, is a Historical mystery series (not including fantasy). These are the ones which came to mind. I enjoyed some more than others and I have not read all of these series.
Since I haven’t read everything, it’s a subset of the possibilities. I’m sure I am forgetting some great authors. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.
My Historical Mystery series are (in no particular order):
Lady Sherlock Charlotte & Thomas Pitt Gaslight Mystery
by Sherry Thomas by Anne Perry by Victoria Thompson
Lady Darby Mystery Sebastian St. Cyr Amelia Peabody
by Anna Lee Huber by C. S. Harris by Elizabeth Peters

I don’t read a lot in this genre so I can’t name a favorite series. Several of these look really good.
I have read more historical mysteries than anyone would suspect because … they are MYSTERIES! For nearly 15 years, that is all I read. I’ve been enjoying all of these over the years. I’m not up to date on all these series though.
I had seen that Lady Sherlock series and it looked interesting for sure. thanks for the giveaway!
Sure! Series on Saturdays is my way to point out series I love and do a giveaway for my readers. It was the fun thing I decided on for my blog when I started on my own. Thanks for visiting.
This subgenre is my jam and I could literally name a long list that would be well-loved. I love all the ones you have in your group up there with Anne Perry and Elizabeth Peters being my most favs. I keep my eye out for more to try.
Have you tried all of these series? It is really hard to pick favorites if you have. Thanks for your help and recommendations. It’s another thing I love about having you and the rest of the team here.
Yep! Tried them and am all caught up on them save for the gaslights (only on two of those). I have at least two or three favorites for each era and a few for other cultures in past eras. LOL
Happy to help with the lists and recs! Fun to be part of the BAMH team. 🙂
I read all sorts of books, but this post hit a soft spot. Especially since i’m usually up to trying a new series. The Lady Sherlock series is the latest series I am reading. Anna Lee Huber other historical series set after WWII is worth mentioning too.
Well obviously I enjoy all of these. It’s a genre I love more than expected.
Lady Julia Grey by Deanna Raybourn is probably my favorite. These have a little less history & a bit more sassiness. Julia is naïve yet optimistic. A refreshing character.
Characters are the heart of every book. World-building and plot show who they are.
You’ve got my two favorites already listed, Gaslight Mystery by Victoria Thompson and Sebastian St. Cyr by C. S. Harris. I love both of them with Sebastian having a slight edge. I’m collecting the books in the Lady Sherlock series, though.
I just listened to my first Sebastian one and it’s rather wonderful. I think more complex than the Gaslight mysteries but also set in England. And Davina Porter! Thanks for visiting!
Veronica Speedwell by Deanna Raybourn is my absolute favorite! I love that series so much. I’m in the middle of the fifth book now!
I always think of that more as fantasy but I could be wrong since I haven’t read it. I want to read it. Sophia reviewed it today.
Fantasy?! Nope it’s straight up historical mystery. If you like Lady Sherlock you will like Veronica. She’s a smart, self-made woman who happens to fall into a mystery. There is no fantasy or supernatural or anything. You should definitely give it a go.
OK I have always wanted to read these (on audio) I don’t know where I got that impression. Maybe the covers as they look more fantasy than realism?
