This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre or topic.
The topic here, by my definition, is a series set in London. These are the ones which came to mind. I enjoyed some more than others.
Since I haven’t read everything, it’s a subset of the possibilities. I’m sure I am forgetting some great authors. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.
My favorite London series are (in no particular order):
Sebastian St. Cyr Richard Jury Charlotte & Thomas Pitt
by CS Harris by Martha Grimes by Anne Perry
Alex Verus Thomas Lynley Duncan Kincaid & Gemma James
by Benedict Jacka by Elizabeth George by Deborah Crombie

Hands down my most favorite is Sebastian St. Cyr by C. S. Harris! This series has everything…complex historical fiction, mystery, intrigue and romance. I began this series as a Goodreads group read and we rapidly finished it together. Hate being up to date.
I’m loving that one too! I only just finished the 3rd one. Plus Davina Porter. But I hate what happened to Sebastian and Cat.
We weren’t fans of Cat. Be interesting to see if you feel the same as you move through the series.
I haven’t read any of these books, but I’ve read a lot set in London, but the books I can think of go all over England. Not just London. Like Verity Kent and Lady Darby.
Well some of these are based in London but do go all over the country in their various investigations.
My favorite London series is Bec McMaster’s London Steampunk series.
I’m sure that’s a great choice and I’m hoping to read it. It is on my tbr.
I forgot about London Steampunk, but good one, Janie.
I also love the Sebastian St. Cyr and both Anne Perry series, too.
I really love all of these and I have read all of most of them. It’s a favorite sort of category for me.
I love a London setting! And this is a great list. Anne Perry’s series is the only one on here I’ve read. I have read one Crombie and one George novel, both of which I enjoyed. I need to go back and start from the beginning of those series. And I’d like to read Harris’s series. I would add Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series to the list.
Sadly I’ve only read a few by Anne Perry and want to read more. I’ve read the entire George and Crombie series and LOVE them. I’ve seen the George series on PBS a long while ago too, very different than the books. I just finished the 3rd book in CS Harris’ series and am LOVING it. I’d like to read the Gail Carriger books too.
I feel like I have read a lot of historical romance series set in London but I am not thinking that I have read too many in other genres.
I don’t read hardly any historical romance but it would be good to include some. Most of these are mysteries except the Benedict Jacka UF series.
I’ve read most of the books in all the series listed and I’ve probably read a hundred more set in London. Just listened to Fated in audio last week, plan to rework my way through the whole series in audio. However, I’m going with The Rook Files (The Rook and Stiletto) by Daniel O’Malley. I consider them a mystery/sci-fi blend and quite unique.
ooo we did the Alex Verus Read-along in 2019 and I loved it so much! Audio is a good choice. Gildart Jackson is amazing. I’ll have to look into the O’Malley books, they are new to me.
Unfortunately, I don’t pay enough attention to books to know if there are based in London proper or a suburb, or English Countryside. LOL. But I did just start the Kat Holloway Mysteries by Jennifer Ashley and that is set in London. And then there is the London Steampunk series by Bec McMaster – it’s an alternate timeline London, but still London.
Those are great options (which I’ve yet to read but want to read) . I could have included A Darker Shade of Magic books by VE Schwab which has several different Londons too.
haven’t read many; no fav
This is a decent list to try if you like mystery or UF. There are lots of other people have mentioned for scifi, historical romance and steampunk.
I haven’t read any of these! When I saw London my first thought was the VE Schwab series we just read, since that’s VERY london lol, but none the real one. It’ll be interesting to see which wins.
I should have included the VE Schwab series! These are from mystery, historical mystery, and urban fantasy. If I had worked on genre diversification I could have found a historical romance I’m sure. But these are all great series.
Sebastian St. Cyr by C. S. Harris I read it recently excellent. I don’t get a lot of time to myself but sitting back with a good book even for 30 mins a day is the best!
It is a really great series so far. I’ve only read the first 3 and I have the 4th now from the library. I listen while I do chores, cooking, walk the dog, or travel in the car to doc appt or pharmacy pickup. I used to spend more time in the car or running errands when I would listen. But I’ve read all the Jacka, Grimes, Crombie and George books and loved them. Anne Perry is prolific and it’s been a long time since I read her. I want to go back and catch up to date.
I like the Shopaholic series because I can relate to it!
That is a fun series. It’s been awhile since I read it. Does it start in NYC and move to London I think? Or the other way around.
