This is a new feature I developed where each month we will look at our favorite – the best – series in a genre.
The genre here, by my definition, is series where the main character(s) is a K9 law enforcement officer or trainer who works with them. I did a K9 post on this previously and since then I have found so many additional great series. Here are the first 6 series I enjoyed:
Run to Ground Irresistible Force Extreme Honor Breaking Creed Lock N Load Killing Trail
by Katie Ruggle by DD Ayres by Piper J. Drake by Alex Kava by Tee O’Fallon by Margaret Mizushima
I’m sure there are more I haven’t found. There are also plenty of authors I have yet to read. Please share your favorites with me in the comments, also.
My additional, favorite K9 Unit series are (in no particular order):
FBI K-9 Mercy & Elvis Mysteries Operation K-9 Brothers
by Sarah Driscoll by Paula Munier by Sandra Owens
Bone Gap Travellers K-9 Mystery Sydney Rose Parnell
by Susan Furlong by Bev Pattersen by Barbara Nickless

This is a good reference list, when I’m in the mood for a K9 story, thank for sharing?
Thanks Tammy. My choices are ones where the dogs do actual work and play a decent size role. They tend to be more layered or complex in some way than just a mystery or romance where the person has a dog.
While I have vague memories of reading one or two others, my favorite by being able to remember it is the Paw Enforcement series by Diane Kelly. It looks like that series may be a tad lighter in tone than the ones listed.
Yes I knew about that one in the first go round and read the first book. The main character did not seem very realistic to me. *shrugs* These all have more serious stories but even if they are romances, the dogs play a definite role and we learn about their work/or training and they contribute to the case. Even the romances I chose, one of the couple is a K-9 handler or PI with canine who does actual work with the dog.
LOL, you named the ones I knew about. You’re the K-9 guru. 🙂 I’ve got Splintered Silence on my reading pile and added the Blood on the Tracks after your review the other day.
Yes I’m loving them. There are at least 6-7 more I know about and didn’t list because they were not dog intensive enough or more like a romance and the people have a dog but it plays no role in the story, or possibly because there was only one book so far in the series. I’d recommend that Becoming K-9 by Rada Jones since it was a freebie, very short and charming, from the dog’s POV, but just one book so far. But Blood on the Tracks is just the opposite, almost 400 pages, very serious, also lots of dog work, something like 6 or 8 books in the series.
My favorite K-9 series is K-9 Rescue by D. D. Ayres. Thanks for giving me more to check out, Anne?
The DD Ayres was on the first round and it’s middle of the road K=9 with cases and romance, but not as serious tone or as much dog work as some of the other stories. I like the ones with the most dog work best.
I haven’t read any of these books but I do tend to enjoy books that feature K9 officers. I have read Alex Kava, Piper J. Drake, and Katie Ruggle. Fun Post!
I just keep finding more and loving them.
