I continued with the Detective Kate Young series. Kate is smart but still burdened by the death of her husband and a lack of any friends or support. Now her sister, Tilly is back in England, the sister who stole her fiance. She has her son with her and their marriage is having problems.
The groundwork of Kate’s close relationship with her husband and his death is laid well in An Eye for an Eye, and is not repeated here. She still connects with him but only briefly here and there. She still believes he was murdered, as he was investigating corruption in the force.
Here we have a story of a rapist who is after women who look like Kate’s sister, who was raped at 14. Now that the sister is back in town, there is a rape and often murder, of women looking like her, almost daily. I twigged to this faster than Kate. But Kate was also investigating facets of her husband’s death.
Kate collects evidence on both cases. She eventually solves her rapist case. The cases are dark and gritty and twisted in with the police corruption which continues, including those Kate knows well and expects to be on her side. I can’t wait to see how she brings them down in some future book.

This narrator was new to me with this series. I am comfortable with her performance. The voices of both males and females voices sounding appropriate with the sound of the region. I enjoyed her voice for Kate. The voices were differentiated for other main characters but I was focused on the story more and Kate has the most time in the story. I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.

I read all types of books but my favorites are urban fantasy and romantic suspense.I like some romance and some action / adventure / mystery in everything.I like sex in my books but please, only between TWO people.Intimate conversation is equally important to the sex in a book.It lets me see the characters.The other thing I enjoy is humor.

I’m now regretting not getting the first book in the series when it was offered. But, I’m glad you did and are enjoying. I’ll keep following your progress and live vicariously?
It’s an interesting story and I’m enjoying it.
So this is about a female rapist? How unusual. It sounds very dark, but also like there is lots of character development.
OK maybe I should reword that sentence. The(male rapist) is after someone who looks like Kate’s sister.
She’s got a lot going on all around and it sounds like a thoroughly engaging book. I need to start the series.
I love this sort of book with a setting in England. and a DI or DS or whatever member of the police are investigating.
The police corruption angle sounds so interesting!
It is!! The corruption as well as her personal life is an overall story arc in the series while investigations are completed within one book.
I like the sound of this mystery. There’s a lot going on character wise and with the mystery. I’ll have to see if they have the first audio at my library. Wonderful review, Anne!
Rachel, it probably won’t be at your library as it is in KU. KU has many of these sorts of stories which are excellent. I have many favorites.
I have KU and just checked both books are “read and listen for free”. I’ll have to grab it up once I get through a few library lends.
You should start with the first one An Eye for an Eye. Then this one.
WHEW! This is a new author and series to me, and it sounds intense — and compelling.

This sounds like another mystery series that would be worth a try. It sounds like Kate has a lot of personal issues to deal with in addition to solving the cases.
