Five years have passed since Eryn and Enric became parents; travelling between two countries on a regular basis as imposed upon them by Eryn’s brother Vran’el has become part of their everyday lives. Vern returns from Takhan after completing his training as a healer there, facing the challenge or readapting to a home, which has become a decidedly abnormal place for him.

While Eryn and Enric are struggling catch up with everything that happened during their absence from Anyueel, King Folrin finally decides to take a companion to fulfill his duty of providing an heir to his throne. He has, however, no intention of taking the difficult task of seeking a suitable candidate entirely upon himself. So Eryn and Enric are granted the non-too-greatly appreciated honour of assisting their sovereign in his endeavour.

It has been a long while since I’ve been in the world of The Order (Jan 2018 to be exact). I was a bit worried I wasn’t going to remember everything, since it has been so long. But, it didn’t take me long to get back into the story (though I did reread my previous reviews for a refresher).

This series is very fun. It takes place in two different countries that are very different from each other. Anyueel, also known as the “Old Kingdom” has a king and The Order of Magicians. The Order is a group of battle magicians. They operate separate from the king, but are still under his rule. This country is more conservative and is cooler with seasons.

Then there is Takhan, which is much more enlightened. They don’t use their magic for battling, but for healing. They have a ruling senate. They value things like art and music. Takhan is much more desert, so hotter with less water.

In this book, the main couple, Eryn and Enric are coming back to Anyueel after spending six months in Takhan. They then learn that King Florin must find a queen and provide an heir. Since there are more magicians in Anyueel now that the curse has lifted, he has decided to search outside of the kingdom for a wife. He also decided that picking someone from Takhan would strengthen their alliance. But things are never that easy.

I won’t go into too much more, but it was a great story with an assassination plot, a toddler with a porn book in a conservative country and a young adult who learns he isn’t all that. This series is filled with a large cast of very interesting characters. I love all of them and their interactions with each other. I see myself a bit in Eryn, with her hatred of social gatherings and while I don’t have kids, I think we would have the same parenting style. Nothing I can say will portray how much I love this series.

These books are very long, but, as my husband can attest, I looked for any reason to get back to my ebook. I’m not normally pulled into ebooks like I am with audiobooks, but this series is one where I’m always looking to dive back in. Every time I get a new book, I’m hesitant to start it because the page count is intimidating, but once I start, I’m pulled in and don’t want it to end. I’m looking forward for the next book, which is already on my kindle (I will probably have read it by the time this review has posted).

    • I just love these characters so much. I’m struggling with the next book a bit, because Enric and Eryn travel to a new country to try to solve a mystery that shows up in this story. I’m missing so many of the characters I love. I still enjoy this next story, but not as much as the previous books.

  1. It’s true that they’re a bit long but it looks nice! Mainly if you wanted o go back to the story each time

  2. This sounds like so much fun – just my kind of thing. Thank you for a lovely review – I’ve made a note of the series, Melanie:)).
