When Dragos and Pia move to the Other land of Rhyacia, they hope starting a new life will bring safety and freedom to their family, especially their young baby, Niall. And at first their new home seems perfect… but looks are deceiving.
Beneath Rhyacia’s idyllic façade an ancient, malevolent force lurks, waiting for the right opportunity to break free of its cage. When that opportunity comes, it strikes with devastating accuracy.
While Dragos has never backed down from a fight, he’s also never encountered an enemy like this one before. How can he fight a foe who doesn’t have a body? A foe who can invade and turn his own mind against him?
How can Dragos protect his family, when at any moment one of them may become the enemy?
As Dragos and Pia race against time to fight this unseen menace, they must also acknowledge a terrifying truth—when anyone can become the enemy, no one can be trusted.
An adversary who can trap the dragon poses a threat to everyone in Rhyacia, and that means no one is safe…
I’ve loved the Elder Races series which started with Dragos and Pia. This novella, The Adversary, is the second half of a story which began in The Unseen which ends on a cliffhanger of sorts. I think these two novellas could have all just been one book. They are each a bit over 100 pages which is my personal cutoff for novella, so I would call them more half books.
Dragos and Pia are a beloved couple and we see many other favorites as well. This new dimension, which they are making their home, has some leftovers from the previous inhabitants. The “leftovers” are not friendly, more like power hungry. It becomes a real battle of life and death.
Their son, Liam, and many other friends come to help, but it is dangerous for them. The small children are taken away to be protected for the battle. The story is another aspect of the world-building and shows clearly how special this couple is. It’s a pleasure to be with them again.

Very nice review. I agree these two could have been combined. I also felt after the end of this novella that its time to let Pia and Dragos go and move onto other couples or showcase previous couples and what they are up to. It was nice to re-visit the world and see it expanding.
Thank you! I have enjoyed this series. I even liked getting this view into this first couple and a peek at many other couples. Perhaps a new series could be about Liam except that seems more UF than PNR.
Sounds like a very interesting series. I do agree that it seems like the two novellas could have been combined but I’m glad you still enjoyed the story overall.
Hopefully it will be offered as a box set sometime in the future. The first one ends in a sort of cliffhanger so it would be a good idea.
I’m not really aware of this series. I did read a lot of the Elder Races, but it has been a few years since I read one of them.
This is a novella set at the end of the series but it is about Dragos and Pia who started the series.
