A most unexpected client shows up at Charlotte Holmes's doorstep: Moriarty himself. Moriarty fears that tragedy has befallen his daughter and wants Charlotte to find out the truth.
Charlotte and Mrs. Watson travel to a remote community of occult practitioners where Moriarty's daughter was last seen, a place full of lies and liars. Meanwhile, Charlotte's sister Livia tries to make sense of a mysterious message from her beau Mr. Marbleton. And Charlotte's longtime friend and ally Lord Ingram at last turns his seductive prowess on Charlotte--or is it the other way around?
But the more secrets Charlotte unravels about Miss Moriarty's disappearance, the more she wonders why Moriarty has entrusted this delicate matter to her of all people. Is it merely to test Charlotte's skills as an investigator, or has the man of shadows trapped her in a nest of vipers?
I love this world and its layered characters! There are many threads from the previous book, The Murder on Cold Street which take us into a new adventure. I would read this series in order because the complexity of the characters and relationships which are just as important as the particular cases. They build over the Lady Sherlock series and are spectacular.
Moriarty is forcing himself back to the top in Miss Moriarty, I Presume? He “engages” Charlotte to find out about his daughter and her status. It is a push back at those who have foiled him previously. Charlotte and her allies go to see the daughter and it is a place of deception. This investigation is very dangerous from many players.
The allies were so supportive of Charlotte. Olivia is visiting for some of the time. Mrs. Watson and Ash are fervently devoted to Charlotte. The progression of the connection between Charlotte and Ash is delicious. Ash is working on his divorce but doesn’t know how to tell his children.
There is a subtlety of critical details in the overall suspense with the danger for our beloved characters. I can’t express how exciting and excellent my time was reading. Charlotte’s work and deductions were brilliant and shocking as always.

Narration:
I am have really enjoyed Kate Reading as the narrator for this series. The voices of different characters are recognizable for me. I love her voice for Ash. Both male and female voices seem appropriate, including their accents. I’m not an expert on regional accents so they may not be accurate. I was able to listen at my normal 1.5x speed.

Love seeing a 5 star review, Anne. This sounds amazing!
During the past couple years I’ve been enjoying historical mysteries in a big way. But they are similar to fantasy, they just don’t have magic / supernatural effects. I find I don’t enjoy historical fiction because I want to know what really happened instead. Which is kinda crazy because I mostly read fiction.
I’ve started the this series as well as her Elemental one.
I’ve only read this series but I’ll have to look at her other titles.
I only tried the first one but I’m curious to read more!
I’d say they just keep getting better.
I love the sound of this book. And what a gorgeous cover 😀
The cover is stunning.
Well that sure sounds like it was fun.
It was suspenseful but really fun.
What a beautiful cover! And I love that Moriarty shows up in this one.
The Moriarty part is terrifying.
I loved that Moriarity was finally meeting her face to face in this one and it really built to a great finish. One of favorite all-time series.
Yes it is very well plotted.
I’ve only read the first book in the series. The romance seemed complicated, but the mystery was nice. Maybe someday I’ll get back to it. Fab review, Anne!
Yes I would say the romance IS complicated. But the mysteries are so clever.
I really do need to start reading this series. I am convinced that I would love it.
It’s a real favorite of mine. I did only start reading historical mysteries of this sort about 2 years ago but it has become a very strong genre for me.
I think these books sound really good.
I really enjoy them. The mystery is the foreground and a bit of romance in the background. The science aspects are intriguing too.
This is a new to me series. Think I may start it for the library love challenge
I hope you love it as much as I do.
I’ve got the audio for review and hope to listen this weekend. Glad to see you rated it so high. I love this series.
I love it. I hope you love it too.
I’m excited to read this one!!
I thought it was amazing!
I love this series and can’t wait to get my hands on this one.
Exactly right!!
This was another good one! I love how the characters are developing from book to book.
