I love testing out a new series.  I especially love it when the series exceeds expectations and I end up really enjoying the book.  On the recommendation of a friend, I picked up S T Abbey’s Mindf*ck series without any real clue as to what I was reading.  From the name I expected some kind of dark, twisted plot involving mental torture and a twisted relationship.  The book covers look like they could be BDSM or erotica.  However, what I discovered was an intriguing, dark romantic suspense story in a series of connected short novellas that kept me engaged from start to finish.

Lana Myers is gorgeous, driven, and tenacious.  She’s determined to avenge her brother and to write the wrongs committed against their family.    She’s self-aware and has a high emotional intelligence which seems to help her stay focused.  She’s highly resilient and able to bounce back from setbacks.  She is not easily intimidated or deterred from pursing justice, even in the face of a town that seems to be the equivalent of hell on earth. This isn’t a legal procedural that follows the intricacies of a court case.  Nope.  Justice in Lana’s case doesn’t come in the form of a fair trial.

The upright and honest Logan Bennett is an FBI agent out to solve some of the most heinous crimes on record.  He’s exactly my favorite kind of hero…a really good guy.  And hot.  Let’s not forget that.  He’s also married to his job and hasn’t been able to find someone that will take a back seat to his work.  When he meets Lana, he’s drawn in by her wry humor, looks, and sad eyes.  I like the interaction between him and his coworkers, which provide most of the comic relief in the story.

I am trying to avoid any major spoilers, which is hard with this particular series.  There are some pretty dark moments that might be triggers for someone that has experienced abuse and sexual violence.  I think the author used flashbacks effectively when telling the back story, but I found it pretty hard to comprehend the depravity of the crimes and the resulting attitude of those who witnessed or perpetrated them.  Even before knowing the full extent of Lana’s story, it was easy for me to root for her.  I found her interesting and compelling and I actually enjoyed her brand of justice.  Reminder:  this is fiction.  S T Abby does a great job of keeping true to Lana and Logan’s core values and beliefs.  Perhaps realizing that things are not always black and white is part of the plot.

Logan and Lana together were perfect.  They have an automatic connection that was organic and believable.  While they both relish the time they spend together, they also give each other the space and flexibility to dash off without any hurt feelings when ‘work’ calls.  I think that this element is essential to their love story, because without that slow start, I think Lana would have maintained her distance and not have pursued a relationship.  I appreciate that S T Abby doesn’t try to explain the psychiatry behind Lana’s personality, but does a great job of setting up plausible exceptions to some of the standard character traits someone like Lana would have.   Ugh, still trying not to spoil it.

While I might never have picked Mindf*ck to read on my own, I am so thankful my friend insisted.  It was a well-written and interesting series with plenty of action and romance.  If you like romantic suspense, I would recommend  you give it a try. It isn’t available in audio, which I normally prefer, and this was well worth the effort of reading on an eReader.  Each book/novella ends in a cliffhanger, so make sure to get all of the series at once.  At the time of this review, they are all available on Kindle Unlimited.
