Daphne McFadden already knows that as a female author, the cards are stacked against her. Now she knows just how much. Because her sudden whim to pose as an “outdoorsy hunk of masculinity” male author for her new book just resulted in the a bidding war, a huge book deal, and the kind of fame every author dreams of. Now she’s in big trouble. Because she needs to convince the world that Zane Remington actually exists . . . but how? By hiring an actor, of course.
Only Chris Stanton is not an actor—not officially. He’s used to balancing the books, not pretending he wrote one. Still, he’s mostly certain he can pose as some overly macho bro-author. But when the media descend on Daphne’s gorgeous remote home in the Yukon, it’s not enough for Chris to just be the face of Zane Remington—he’ll have to become him. All while hilariously balancing the terrifying dangers of the wilderness, a massive femme fandom, and a serious crush on Daphne. But as the hype circus gets more out of control, it’s just a matter of time before someone discovers their little write lie . . .
Romantic comedy is not this author’s usual genre, but I really enjoy her work. The premise really makes sense in this crazy world. A female writer used a male pen name in hopes of getting her book noticed. It worked – too well!
Daphne has done well for herself both as an architect and as a writer. She hires her lawyer’s accountant to act as her pen name thinking it will just be a few photos. Chris had a partner in business who was very unreliable and now he is trying to get his finances back on track. To Daphne’s surprise, her book is a bestseller and she is attracted to Chris.
Daphne and Chris dance around each other for numerous reasons. Neither has had the best relationships in the past. Daphne, more than Chris, is afraid of being hurt again. Chris is also attracted to her and pretty serious about a relationship. But they are also employer – employee, don’t live in the same town and now there are interviews and book tours and signings to fill their time.
Daphne realizes she must come clean that she is the author. Chris, her lawyer, her agent, her publicist, and her publisher all seem to have ideas about the best way to do it. I really like how even though both Chris and Daphne made mistakes they were willing to learn and talk them out and forgive each other. They were great together in the end.

Yours is the first review I’ve read for this book, I’ve been so curious, since this is out of the author’s usual genre. I love the idea and it sounds like fun😁
I think the author is excellent. Even books out of her genre are good.
I did a double take when I saw the author! Thanks for the excellent review, Anne💜
Thank you Jonetta. It was a fun read. She’s an author I watch. I don’t read the horror titles though.
I love Armstrong’s other books, but this is a departure for her. Still, I’m very much looking forward to reading it. 😀
yes I wanted to try it because I love the author. I thought it went well.
I hope to read this one this week! I’m behind as usual. Glad you liked it!
Kelley Armstrong is great in any genre.
I enjoyed this one too. It did get out of hand pretty fast, didn’t it? I still have to write my review, I’ve fallen a bit behind.
Yes it got so out of hand and so fast. She just didn’t expect the book to be so successful.
This sounds fun! I love a out of control chaos kind of book and I’ve really enjoyed everything I’ve read by Kelley Armstrong.
I was a little worried but knowing it was a rom-com helped. It was fun.
Genre shift for the author?
Doubtful as she has many ongoing series right now. But possibly a genre addition. 🙂
I enjoyed this one too! Definitely think this author can write anything she sets her mind to. I loved reading about how she came up with the story too.
Kelley Armstrong has all kinds of talent. I’m not surprised how much I enjoyed this one.
