Cryptid, noun:

1. Any creature whose existence has been suggested but not proven scientifically. Term officially coined by cryptozoologist John E. Wall in 1983.

2. That thing that's getting ready to eat your head.

3. See also: "monster."

The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity - and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she'd rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and when her work with the cryptid community took her to Manhattan, she thought she would finally be free to pursue competition-level dance in earnest. It didn't quite work out that way...

But now, with the snake cult that was killing virgins all over Manhattan finally taken care of, Verity is ready to settle down for some serious ballroom dancing - until her on-again, off-again, semi-boyfriend Dominic De Luca, a member of the monster-hunting Covenant of St. George, informs her that the Covenant is on their way to assess the city's readiness for a cryptid purge. With everything and everyone she loves on the line, there's no way Verity can take that lying down.

Alliances will be tested, allies will be questioned, lives will be lost, and the talking mice in Verity's apartment will immortalize everything as holy writ - assuming there's anyone left standing when all is said and done. It's a midnight blue-light special, and the sale of the day is on betrayal, deceit...and carnage.

In this second book in the InCrypid series, Verity is still in Manhattan. However, she learns that the Covenant is planning a purge of the city. The Covenant is a group of extremists who don’t believe this world belongs to any sentient creatures other than humans. They kill off any other creatures they come across. They are known for the extinction of several species, though some are not as extinct as once thought. Verity will not leave the city without helping her friends, the creatures of Manhattan.

Then she learns about which people the Covenant has sent to Manhattan. Once is a long lost relative, who stayed with the Covenant and still believes in their mission of clearing the planet of cryptids. And the Price family too. The Covenant doesn’t take kindly to people who leave their little group (cult much?)

Verity is also tested by the fact that she’s been on-again off-again dating a member of the Covenant. They met in the first book. And while she has convinced him that not all cryptids are bad people. When it comes time to choose sides, she’s not entirely sure which side he will choose.

We also get to meet more of the Price family. Well, adopted into the family. Uncle Mike has married a cryptid, so he is fighting to protect them the same way the Price family protects the not-so-human people of this planet. It was great to meet more of her family, not by blood, but by choice. He’s a pretty great guy.

I won’t go into details about the plot. Just know that this is another fun story that is full of action and humor. The author does a great job of filling in needed blanks of book one, if you decide to skip it and start with this book. I don’t recommend it, but that is because I prefer to read the series in order. It is a series I will continue to work my way through. I know I’m way late to the party, but better late than never.

Narration:

While it took me a little bit with the first book to get used to the voice of Emily Bauer, she is now the voice of Verity in my head. I think she does a good job with all the voices in this series and there are a lot of them. And a lot of different types of creatures to voice. There’s talking mice, dragons, were-creatures, boogeymen and more. I would listen to her again, for sure.

About Seanan McGuire

Hi! I’m Seanan McGuire, author of the Toby Daye series (Rosemary and Rue, A Local Habitation, An Artificial Night, Late Eclipses), as well as a lot of other things. I’m also Mira Grant (www.miragrant.com), author of Feed and Deadline.

Born and raised in Northern California, I fear weather and am remarkably laid-back about rattlesnakes. I watch too many horror movies, read too many comic books, and share my house with two monsters in feline form, Lilly and Alice (Siamese and Maine Coon).
