Police corruption, an investigation that ends in tragedy and the mystery of a little girl's silence - three unconnected things that will prove to be linked by one small town.
While Detective Cormac Reilly faces enemies at work and trouble in his personal life, Garda Peter Fisher is relocated out of Galway with the threat of prosecution hanging over his head. But even that is not as terrible as having to work for his overbearing father, the local copper for the pretty seaside town of Roundstone.
For some, like Anna and her young daughter Tilly, Roundstone is a refuge from trauma. But even this village on the edge of the sea isn't far enough to escape from the shadows of evil men.
The Ruin was the first in the Cormac Reilly series. Cormac is a homicide detective in Ireland and has been for 20 years. He has had real success but has just transferred from to a new location because of his girlfriend, Emma’s job. He’s being shunted off to cold cases in the new unit.
Now Emma has moved to Belgium after a problem with her job in the last book where Cormac supported her choices.  In Good Turn, Cormac is having his team decimated with team members being taken into a drugs task force so he has hardly anyone available when a young girl goes missing. He argues for more team members and does the best he can with the 3 people he has. He is with the family when another team member goes after the abductor’s car. The end result is Cormac is put on suspension and his team member Peter is reassigned to his very small hometown under the rule of his father, Dez. Dez is lazy, drinks too much, and somewhat corrupt.
Everything is bad and frustrating for quite awhile for Cormac and Peter. They work on what they can and have some stumbles.  Peter does get to see his beloved grandma and help her as she is in a bad situation. It is scary how bad things are before they start to improve.
I loved this twisty book with plenty of action. Peter has some great growth and further improvement in his skills in spite of the sidelining by Dez. He feels abandoned by Cormac but that is because of lack of communication between them. Cormac goes to Belgium to visit Emma, but then comes back with renewed purpose.
I’m so excited to learn there will be a new book in this series this year!
Narration:
I don’t have the experience to know if the Irish accents is authentic but it was certainly enjoyable. The main character is male but many of the story’s important characters were female. All the voices seemed right for both male and females. I was so happy to hear this narrator again. The performance was a pleasure at my usual 1.5x speed.

Never heard of this series, but it does sound good. I’d be frustrated for Cormac in this situation!
This one is frustrating for him. I love this series. Some of the earlier ones were Audible Originals when they gave them away I think. Anyway, I think you’d enjoy them.
Can’t wait to get back to this series!
yes! I’m so glad there will be a new one this year.
Another series I think my mom should try! I have tried getting her to come look at the blogs I know read what she likes, but just can’t get her too. So I will just keep recommending by word of mouth! Great review!
Thank you! I really enjoy this author.
Hopefully the next keeps your interest!!!
This author seems to do a good job with pacing and twists.
