Its nearly Christmas and Aurora has recently celebrated a new marriage, a little future bundle of joy is on the way, but all the cheer fizzles out when her teenage brother who has been staying with her vanishes along with several other kids from the school. Charlaine Harris’s Aurora Teagarden mysteries have been a wonderful blend of layered characters, well-developed relationships, small town setting, and mystery.
All the Little Liars is book nine in the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries. While each mystery is standalone, Aurora’s ongoing story along with the rest of the folks in Lawrenceton, GA makes it best to read this series in order to get the unfolding story.
All the Little Liars opens with Aurora and Robin returned from their honeymoon, settling into married life and now turning their thoughts to Aurora’s surprise pregnancy and the decisions they need to make. In the background, they know they have their first Christmas together coming up and Aurora also wants to make it special for her younger half-brother Phillip, who has been living with them since his parents’ lives and marriage exploded out in California.
Roe is caught up in everything so she is stunned when the mom of Phillip’s closest friends calls to ask if Roe has seen the kids as they never came home after school and sports practice. Teens do things like that, but Roe gets a bad feeling because Phillip usually calls if he is deviating from his plans. It is not long before her fears are realized and Phillip, Jos, Jos’ friend, Josh, a younger girl who is her vicar Aubrey’s daughter, and a rich popular jock kid all are missing.
The police and sheriff’s departments get on it, but Roe and Robin don’t plan to sit back and do nothing. Roe delves into the kids’ lives and their recent movements even as the police explore darker motives for one of the teens themselves, namely her new-to-town brother, for this happening. Roe comes across a case of severe bullying for the youngest girl and that she had a crush on Phillip, she discovers a secret first love between two of the girls, a rich kid with wild ways, and people who seem to know more than they are saying. And, that was before the first body turns up.
How do a big group of teens just vanish and why? Roe needs answers, even while her dad and his wife both show up and the drama ratchets up. Robin’s got her back and she does what she’s good at, but will it be enough to bring Phillip and his friends home for Christmas?
All the Little Liars felt edgy and up to the minute with the focus on the teenagers and exploring them and all the possibilities as the search goes on. The bullying situation was awful and so brutal that it brought tears to my eyes. A few of the other situations between trouble between teens and their parents or between each other were also touching. Charlaine Harris wasn’t afraid to delve into the darker corners of even these young lives let alone what is going on with the adults.
Roe is splitting her focus between this hunt for her brother, confronting her dad and his issues, figuring out all that goes into having a baby and parenthood, and still working out the early days of a long-term relationship and new marriage with Robin. It could have gotten too busy, but it all melded into one story very well.
All in all, this was compelling and kept me riveted. I was definitely feeling the ‘just-one-more-chapter’ urge throughout. I can’t recommend this small town mystery series enough.
Narration:
Therese Plummer draws the listener deeper into the story and makes all those emotional points punch a little harder so that this really good mystery story captivated me all the more. I appreciated how she drew out Roe’s churning emotions as she felt helpless and fearful in the wake of Phillip’s disappearance and her own hormones and physical weaknesses with the pregnancy. Truly talented.

About Charlaine Harris
