Nils Shapiro has been hired to find missing Linnea Engstrom, a teenager from the small northern hockey town of Warroad, Minnesota. Most of Warroad is in Minneapolis for the state high school hockey tournament, and Linnea never returned from last night’s game. Linnea’s friend Haley Housch is also missing—and soon found dead.
After Nils is shot through the arm with an arrow at the Haley Housch crime scene, only the quick work of medical examiner Char Northagen saves Nil’s life.
Nils should be in the hospital recovering from his near fatal injury, but he knows that the clock is ticking. Linnea could be anywhere, and someone doesn’t want her found. Is Linnea a victim, or is she playing a dangerous game? As bodies start piling up, the clues lead Nils north to Warroad, a small, quiet town with many secrets to hide.

A short review to update challenges
I listened to Gone to Dust after seeing it as an audible daily deal and went on to this next one in the Nils Shapiro series . I really enjoyed the Minnesota setting since so much is familiar, having lived there for many years. Nils has had a change in circumstances since we last saw him. I like it.
I love following detective Nils Shapiro as he meets the characters and gathers information to solve the mystery. Goldman is skilled at the tapestry of detail for interest but not too much to overwhelm the reader. The characters are also richly diverse. I plan to continue with this series; it’s a pleasure.
Narration:
Andrews narrated the first so I was happy to have him return here, as I had settled on his portrayal of Nils. I listened at my normal 1.25x speed with a good flow. I did notice he did not know how to pronounce Wayzata. Otherwise, it was a great performance of the many different characters.

This sounds like something that I would like. I really like MacLeod Andrews as a narrator so it sounds like that would be the way to go. Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes I am a huge fan of all kinds of mysteries. This one is very well-written. Gone to Dust and now Broken Ice.
Another new series for me to check out! Here’s hoping I can find it at the library.
If you can’t let me know. It’s at my library. It’s awesome. Matt Goldman used to write for Seinfeld and went to college at U of MN.
This sounds good, Anne, and I love Minnesota settings even if I’ve never been there. 😉 I’m happy you enjoyed this second installment so much!
It is really good. I seem to be reading lots of Minnesota and North Carolina settings lately.
