When Detective Rebecca North left her rural hometown, she vowed never to return. Her father’s apparent suicide has changed that. The official report is that retired cop Noah North shot himself, knocked over a lantern, and set his isolated cabin ablaze. But Rebecca cannot believe he killed himself.
To prove it, she needs the help of Ash Haugen, the man she left behind. But Rebecca and Ash share more than broken hearts. Something darker lies between them, and the investigation is stirring it back to life. Clues lead them to the home of Olivia West and her deeply troubled twelve-year-old daughter, Tori. The child knows more about the murder than anyone can imagine, but she’s too terrified to say a word.
And as a cold-blooded killer resurfaces from the past, Rebecca and Ash begin to fear that their own secrets may be even harder to survive.
I was so excited to read this second book in the Dark Lure series. The Dark Bones is another case set in the beautiful Canadian wilderness near a smallish community. I was able to get the first book A Dark Lure on audiobook through Kindle Unlimited. It focused on Olivia, with other characters being her boss and his son, Cole, a retired policeman and his adopted daughter Tori.
The town is where Cole, Olivia and Tori now live on Broken Bar Ranch. Another retired policeman lives here and his daughter, Rebecca is a detective in another town. She ends up coming home after her father dies to take care of what was bothering him which is all tied up with her past. It is good to see more of Cole, Olivia and Tori from the first book. Tori plays a part in this story.
Rebecca has the skills to work on sorting out the past and present, but it is dangerous; these people are killing to keep it quiet. She also has a personal past which adds to her emotional burden, along with the grief about her father. She grew up in this town, so she knows her way around and is well-acquainted with some of the people.
The plot is well crafted and suspenseful. I worried for several characters at various points on this action-packed ride. There is a bit of romance in this series but the mystery and suspense hold the center stage. I love this author’s work and can’t wait to read more!

This series sounds like the perfect fit for me. I like the isolation of small town settings and wilderness. My son’s name is Cole too! I think I’ll try the audibles. Thanks for stereing me to these:)
I really like these mystery suspense with a little romance. Romance is not the key component. Jonetta got me started on this author. She’s reading another of her series (which I have bought one of the audios for that series but not listened yet.) Enjoy!
Excellent review, Anne! I can’t wait to start this series.
It’s awesome and I need to start the OTHER series. I have the first audio. Thanks for bringing her to my attention
Now this sounds like a book/series that I would enjoy. I have not read this author before and thanks for bringing these books to my attention. Great review!
You’re welcome. It’s worthwhile reading. I really like a mystery suspense story.
I didn’t know about this one but it looks good there! A great second book!
These are good mystery suspense and a bit dark. I really like them. I hope you get to try them.
Sounds really good. I worry for characters too. I’ll even put the book down for awhile. This reminds me of another book I read that also takes place in the Canadian wilderness. For a minute I thought that book had a sequel.
Lorna this is the sequel or next in series to A Dark Lure.
Yes, I just looked at her books. She did write the one I’m talking about, but I didn’t know that when I commented. It’s called In The Barren Ground and was good, I thought.
