Isaac has never been what he seems.
Rumor has it that gruff, brooding, and solitary man-of-mystery Isaac Sylvester is back in town, and the only thing folks in Green Valley know for certain is that this prodigal son’s motives are as elusive as he is. He’s been spotted loitering near the old Townsen farm, hanging around the Hill's homestead, and glaring menacingly from the edges of The Donner Lodge’s parking lot. What this hometown-hero-turned-criminal wants, no one knows. Nor can they stop talking about it.
Hannah's last night as an exotic dancer might just be her most memorable.
Hannah Townsen has often been a subject of local gossip. Folks shook their heads when Hannah's daddy ran out on her momma; folks blessed her heart after Hannah's momma had that tragic accident; and folks really talked up a tizzy when Hannah became an exotic dancer in order to pay off her parents' debt and put food on the table. But now, ten years after being dubbed as a hometown-stripper-with-a-heart-of-gold, Hannah has seemingly—and finally—fallen off the gossip mill's radar.
I have loved every Winston Brothers series book and now we have a new spinoff series, the Modern Folktales. There are glimpses of Winstons, especially Cletus and Jenn in this one. The main characters are Isaac, who is Jenn’s brother, and Hannah, who is now managing the Pony for Hank.
Isaac is back in Green Valley on a new undercover assignment. He needs Hannah to help with a regular customer of hers who it turns out is trafficker. The customer is using her as a cover for his communications. But he doesn’t know Hannah has had a crush on him.
Isaac becomes a bouncer at the Pony to more easily stay on site. He collects information from the trafficker. The time together lets them build a relationship. Each of them has issues from the past, which keeps the courtship interesting. Hannah has a tendency to run. Isaac commits himself to winning her.
The setup with Isaac being undercover and his plans after this mission were tragic. They meant he would be unable to spend much time with his sister or family. Hannah wasn’t wrong that her choices were black and white; she had to trust him or not see him in the future. Those close to Hannah had let her down most of her life. Although, she did have a lot of support from Hank and others at the Pony.
I really was happy to get Isaac’s story. I didn’t really know who he was. It was already clear in earlier stories his childhood had been traumatic. It was sad to learn more about Hannah’s past but inspiring to see how talented she is. They deserved a happily ever after!

*sigh* One day I’ll start reading these series. Just can’t fit them in! Love that you’re enjoying them, Anne💜
Her characters are diverse and realistic.
Nice review. Glad to see you enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Angela.
That sounds really good. I like it when characters have secrets that we find out about.
They are really unique characters. Her books are always interesting.
I love Penny Reid!!! I need to get back into the series I started. 🙂
She’s definitely written some of my favorite books.
I’ve been wanting to read something by this author for years. This looks good and reminded me to give her books a try. Great review!
I encourage you to read this author; she’s a favorite. But I wouldn’t start with the final book in a spinoff series. I’d start with the first book in one of her series. Knitting in the City and the Winstons are great. Although Winston Bros is sort of a spinoff of Knitting in the City also.
I totally agree with you on it was so great to get to know Isaac. Great review!
Thanks Lisa. He was totally not who I thought he was before the book.
