This story takes place during COVID-19, but after the vaccine is available. The story starts with Holly attending the virtual funeral of her mother who didn’t believe the virus was real and refused the vaccine, like so many others (my mother included, though she is still, gratefully, with us). She decides to listen to a voicemail even though Finders Keepers is closed from her family emergency. A mother is desperate to find her missing daughter. The cops are not helping her and suggested Finders Keepers to her.
Holly decides to take the case, even though her current partner is down with COVID himself, but he’s vaccinated, so just a mild case. Holly is mostly on her own with this investigation. It doesn’t take that much time before she realizes there is more than just the one girl missing.
This story you get both Holly’s POV, but also several other characters, including the killer(s). I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but in this world, it is the humans that are monsters. I know with Stephen King you never know if the evil will be human or not, but this is human.
Now that I know there are more Holly Gibney stories, I will be going back and listening to them too. I will admit that I didn’t remember a lot of the details of the original Bill Hodges series, but that was not an issue here. Neither was the fact that I hadn’t read books one and two. This series isn’t horror, though parts are horrific. I would list this more as a suspense series. I would say it is no more violent or gruesome than Karin Slaughter books. So if you’re worried about Stephen King horror, this is not the horror that he is famous for. But a wonderful story nonetheless.
Narration:
I don’t think I’ve ever listened to Justine Lupe before, but felt she was a great voice for Holly. I had no issues with any of the characters’ voices, be it teens, adults or even the elderly. Male and female were not an issue either. I would gladly listen to her again with either this series or another.

About Stephen King
Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947, the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. He made his first professional short story sale in 1967 to Startling Mystery Stories. I started listening to audiobooks when a new book in a series was coming out and I wanted to get a refresher, but didn’t have time to read all the books (I think it was Anita Blake). I fell in love. I stayed with strictly re-reading books that I’d already read for a long time. I eventually tried an audiobook for something that I hadn’t read first and was hooked there too. Now, I listen to audio for both re-reads and first time. I have some series that I’ve given up reading and only listen. I try to get any many books/audiobooks from the library to help save on my budget. Books on CD and the newer digital downloads from the library really allow me to listen more. I then purchase my favorites (because who can wait in line for your favorite book??) and less mainstream books from Audible or some other online retailer.

You’re right – I would have assumed something supernatural with Stephen King. I didn’t realize he wrote other horror!
I still have the last Bill Hodges book to read, then I could read this series. I think I’d do ok with it though. It’s not horror like some although I’m sure it is scary.
Sometimes human monstrosities are worse to each other than monsters ever could be. Fun that you found out a favorite character got her own series.
It’s been some time since I’ve read one of his books. This does sound like it would be good. In real life, humans are scarier than the supernatural.
Stephen King has a talent for writing characters that feel real and memorable. I really like the sound of Holly. I haven’t read any of King’s recent books, but I think I have to read this one.

I am not a huge fan of Stephen King’s writing style…but this sounds really, really good.
I really am more of a fan of King’s more supernatural horror for the most part. But I’m very far behind on his books anyway. Glad you enjoyed this!
