Homicide Detective Max Rupert never fully accepted his wife's death, even when he believed that a reckless hit and run driver was the cause. But when he learns that in fact she was murdered, he devotes himself to hunting down her killers. Most of his life he had thought of himself as a decent man. But now he's so consumed with thoughts of retribution that he questions whether he will take that last step and enact the vengeance he longs for. On a frozen lake near the U. S.-Canadian border, he wrestles with a decision that could change his life forever, as his hatred threatens to turn him into the kind of person he has spent a career bringing to justice.

The Heavens May Fall and The Deep Dark Descending  are both more focused on Max than the earlier books in the  Detective Max Rupert series.  I enjoy finally getting deep into Max’s past and present.  He has been overrun by his wife’s death 4 years ago and finally he learns why she died.

I love the complexity of the character and his emotions as we learn all the details of what happened. In true detective form, he follows information and tracks down witnesses.  There’s the mystery of how she died and the suspense of how Max will handle the knowledge.

This was another outstanding listen in a series of great books. I’m so excited for the release of The Shadows We Hide this October, which is more of a sequel to The Life We Bury, featuring Joe and Lila.  I do hope we see more of Max as well.

Narration:

Bray also narrated the previous book and I was happy to have the continuity with these two books being Max oriented.  I listened at 1.25x speed, which is my usual. There have been 3 narrators in the 4 books. I’m curious to see who narrates the next one which is back to Joe.  The male and female voices were good.  The narration was comfortable and let me enjoy the story.
