Set in Minnesota, Gone to Dust is the debut private-eye murder mystery from Emmy Award-winning Seinfeld writer Matt Goldman.

A brutal crime. The ultimate cover-up. How do you solve a murder with no useable evidence?

Private detective Nils Shapiro is focused on forgetting his ex-wife and keeping warm during another Minneapolis winter when a former colleague, neighboring Edina Police Detective Anders Ellegaard, calls with the impossible.

Suburban divorcée Maggie Somerville was found murdered in her bedroom, her body covered with the dust from hundreds of emptied vacuum cleaner bags, all potential DNA evidence obscured by the calculating killer.

Digging into Maggie's cell-phone records, Nils finds that the most frequently called number belongs to a mysterious young woman whose true identity could shatter the Somerville family - but could she be guilty of murder?

After the FBI demands that Nils drop the case, Nils and Ellegaard are forced to take their investigation underground, where the case grows as murky as the contents of the vacuum cleaner bags. Is this a strange case of domestic violence or something with far-reaching, sinister implications?

I saw Gone to Dust when it was an audible daily deal and went right out to the library to reserve it. The combination of mystery and setting of Minnesota sold me. I lived in Minnesota for 30 years and went to graduate school there.  I love all the details streets, restaurants, etc.  In writing this review, I see the writer went to school at the University of Minnesota but also wrote for Seinfeld, Ellen, and other tv shows.

It was a very enjoyable book for me with the detective Nils Shapiro solving the mystery. There were some interesting twists and enough layers so the killer wasn’t obvious. The character development was very good, both the main character and his friends, as well as those in the murder investigation. The next book in the Nils Shapiro series is already available; and I have  reserved it, Broken Ice.

Narration:

I recognized this narrator as he has some other audiobooks I want.  I listened at my normal 1.25x speed comfortably with a good flow. The voice felt like a fit with the main character. The differentiation between the characters was great. The performance added to my enjoyment with good emotional presentation.

    • Thanks, Carole. This one is my kind of jam. I like a mystery / detective / police or FBI procedural with action and suspense. The setting in MN is just icing on the cake since I know the streets and restaurants and such.
