When a retired sheriff’s deputy is shot to death in his home, his troubled teenage stepson, Evan, becomes the prime suspect. Even more incriminating, the boy disappeared from the scene of the crime.
Desperate to find her son, Evan’s mother begs PI Lance Kruger for help. She knows her son is innocent. Kruger and defense attorney Morgan Dane want to believe that too, but the evidence against the boy is damning. Just as the trail goes cold, another deputy vanishes. His shocking connection to Evan’s stepfather throws the investigation into chaos as Lance and Morgan fear the worst…that Evan is the killer’s new target.
With so many secrets to unravel, will Lance and Morgan find him before it’s too late?
I requested this immediately when I saw it, since I am up to date with the Morgan Dane series . It is on Kindle Unlimited, with the audio version also. Secrets Never Die is another new and dangerous case with children in the crosshairs as our team is still recovering.
Sharp, Morgan, and Lance continue to outwit and intelligently investigate better than the law enforcement. They have a better rapport with witnesses and victims with their compassionate, quick minds. The pace was brutal as they tried to save the innocent. The area is having difficulty finding a new sheriff who is qualified and capable.
I enjoyed their personal developments also. They are putting an addition on the house, working on parenting, recovering from the flu, and trying to plan their wedding. Sharp is struggling to recover. He is also trying to define his feelings about Olivia.
I love these stories so much! Now I have to wait for Save Your Breath (September). In the meantime, I can go back for the earlier Scarlett Falls series, set in this world.
Narration:
Cris Dukehart is the expected voice here for me. The voices for males and females are comfortable, with distinct ones for different characters. I was able to enjoy the performance at 1.5x speed.

Wow, Anne! A complete 5-star reading experience and that’s high praise. Wonderful review and I can’t wait to get back to this series.
There’s just nothing wrong with it. It is fun and has growth for the people. It’s a good mystery. The narration is great.
Oh, yep, same here. I had to have this as soon as it was available. It was another exciting one and I am so glad she released two Morgan Dane’s this year. 🙂
Yes. I’m so glad I found this series. I think from you!
Wonderful review, Anne. Thanks for steering me to this series. A new one for me and it sounds thrilling.
I’m really enjoying it. It’s also a KU so easy to get, not overly expensive either way.
Oh that’s so great that you had another wonderful time with this sequel!
Thanks. The whole series is just very fun and keeps my interest.
I will check out the first books in this series, since this sounds like something right up my ally! glad you enjoyed it
It’s great romantic suspense. I’d say a bit more on the mystery suspense and the romantic aspects in the background more.
I love both so that’s great!
I have been hearing so many great things about this author and series. 5 hearts across the board is just amazing!
It’s a sentimental favorite series now, like Ilona Andrews, Harry Dresden or the JD Robb books. Every time I get one, it’s a win!
