Julie Meadows is down on her luck when she receives an e-mail drafting her into the Official Para-Military Agency.

She didn’t expect “para” to mean paranormal. Her partner is an Aether Elf prince, her boss is a Were…something, and the IT department is staffed by literal trolls.

The prospect of a steady job and financial security draws her into a world filled with every myth and legend she’s ever read about.

Julie dives into the magical, mystical, and downright fantastic when she and her partner, Taylor are tasked with finding new recruits for the Agency.

The problem? Julie is human, and the cost of failing to find a recruit is her life.

With the help of Taylor and a snarky mystical artifact, Julie races against the clock to avoid a killer mind-wipe.

Drafted is a fluffy and mostly fun story.  It is the first in the Para-Military Recruiter series featuring a human that accidentally ends up as a recruiter in the paranormal world.   Julie might be human but soon finds out, after eating some magic mushrooms, she can see people of the paranormal community. Now she has been drafted to help recruit para-normals into service and she has a deadline to get her first one or end up dead.

I picked this up because of the description and the cover.  Drafted is a bit different in the UF sense as our heroine is not some kick-butt chick but just a run of the mill human who has been drawn into a magical community she didn’t know was around her this entire time.  Partnered with an Aether Elf prince and a sentient software system that comes in the form of a hat, she is off to find someone to sign up before the end of the week or she may end up dead.  Sucks to have a literal deadline.

This is an introduction story.  It did a pretty good job of introducing the reader into a few facets of this world along with some tidbits that lead me to believe there is something going on in the recruiting department and there is a reason with the new rollout of some software recruiting has dropped to almost 0.  Seems like there is a reason and the trolls in the IT department are behind it.

I can see in the future there is going to be some possible romance between Julie and maybe a few of the potential male characters of the book.  Julie’s interactions with the other characters were fun and interesting.  Her mother is a bit over the top and could have been toned down a little bit.  I’m also sure there is a backstory happening with the lady who owns the house where Julie is renting a room.  It will be interesting to see how that is developed.

Overall a good start to something set in a paranormal world, in a way we don’t normally see it.

Narration:

Rebecca Mitchell is a new to me narrator.  She captured the fun of the story and all the characters had distinct voices.  I liked her narration and it followed the tone of the story well.  Overall a good narration of a fun book.   I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed
