Sunday, it’s a heat advisory and tomorrow looks worse. I’m staying cool inside. I’m having a relaxing day with more reading. My daughter has been cleaning, organizing and putting stuff away, primarily her jewelry which she has a lot. She was excited to find her DS which she has been looking for 2 years to find it. So now she is playing the games.
Monday, today we got a break with scattered rain in the afternoon and again in the evening. I was mostly reading and doing computer stuff again. I’m planning the menu around things we have and pushing out grocery shopping until it’s cooler. I made a batch of Lulu food. Our neighbor texted she is coming back tomorrow instead of Friday so we will be walking Wednesday and Thursday. I was up late reading about the indictments.
Tuesday, yesterday’s rain seems to have turned into today’s sticky. I was looking at my review plan through the end of the year and I have almost no slots open in 2023. I already have ARCs for 2024 too. I got a review written but have more to write tomorrow. It’s been raining in the late afternoon and the power flickered. I made a sweet potato soup which had garlic, ginger, and cumin spices. My daughter had a bad reaction to the cumin and my guess is that is what we both don’t like about curry. I’ll use rosemary next time because the soup was good.
Wednesday, I thought today would be better with a north wind but it didn’t last. It was already almost hot when we walked the dogs. Abbey was definitely happy to see us. We also got to visit with Max (very old dachshund) and their new pup Venus left with the neighbors by their granddaughter. Poor Venus just wants to play and Max wants to sleep. I was happy to see them all. I did some of the yard stuff I wanted even though it was hot. Then I sewed on some of my daughter shirts to fix a problem on the seams.
Thursday, the weather was ok when we walked with the dogs. Then I went to do pickups at Sam’s Club and Walmart. I worked on some post setups and reviews. I made a new scallop recipe with sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, onion, and garlic, and cream. I purposefully doubled the 4 veggies and accidentally used about a third of the cream. I didn’t have any white wine so I used about half the amount of white wine vinegar. My daughter insisted I write down all my recipe fiddling because it was awesome and I need to make it again.
Friday, the weather was less humid today. I did my usual stuff. I took Lulu for a walk. Then we ate an early dinner so we could go to a game night. My daughter had been wanting to try one and found a great one nearby that goes every 2 weeks in a church. They have their own huge supply of games, and have people who teach others the games. People also must bring snacks because there was an overflow of them on a table. We were the only ones wearing masks but everyone was nice to us. We learned a new game. Somehow I won the first 2 rounds and then an engineer named Chris the next 2. My daughter was awesome at the game and really should have won; she helped everyone else figure out their best moves. It was called Qwixx and is kind of like Yahtzee only different.
Saturday, the humidity is low today. I’m working on laundry and another big cleaning project. I also have weeds to remove. They are the shoots from the nasty thorny holly bushes we cut down 2 years ago, coming up in and around some beds out front. After that, I took everything out of my huge closet and cleaned the floors, then put everything back after cleaning all of the stuff. Then I vacuumed the bedroom. Since we didn’t play SkipBo last night we decided to play a game of it tonight after dinner. This upcoming week will be another round of very hot and humid.
Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Reading Reality. These are the exciting ARCs I received this week (If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry):
All my thanks to Tantor Audio, Ballantine (2), Berkley Publishing.
(If you click on the cover, it will take you to the Goodreads entry)
NONE.
Now the really scary one. This is all the Kindle and Audible freebies I grabbed this past week. You can see why I need to do Thrifty Thursday to be sure I read a few at least one each month.
I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.
I’m not including things like reviews posted or upcoming as they are always in the right sidebar. And, my challenge status is also there.

I thought I recognized the author Ava Glass so I looked it up on my tracking sheet and she wrote Alias Emma which I read and really enjoyed. I’m glad to see she has a new one, so on my list it goes! Have a terrific week Anne.
Terrie @ Bookshelf Journeys
Thanks Terrie. The Ava Glass books are a good fit for the current COYER Vacation RAT too.
I hope it cools off some over there this week. The scallop recipe sounds good. Happy reading to you and Lulu this week.
Thank you Naida. This week is going to start out scorching but hopefully things will start to get better as we get to September. At least I can just stay in and read as I have lots of great books on hand.
I love it when you tweak a recipe and it’s better than the original. I love hearing about your meeting all the neighborhood dogs. Stay cool if you can!
Thanks Tammy. I never would have thought the dogs would be such a delight but they are. I wouldn’t know about any original recipes. lol
It’s a great time to read inside with the A/C on, that’s for sure!
yes, it feels kind of lazy so I’m doing more cleaning too.
I’m sure you deserve some lazy time.
It is an excessive heat warning here until Thursday for sure, although the said this morning it might go till Friday. But supposedly Saturday will bring down the temps a little finally! I almost got that Talia Hibbert book free until I went to my Goodreads and found I’d already marked getting it as a freebie. I’m guessing through Bookfunnel maybe. Oh well, I liked this cover so probably didn’t remember the other cover as well. Lulu’s pictures are adorable as always. Game night sounds fun! Hope you have a good week!
Thank you Lisa. I also have the Talia Hibbert one both ways. I keep those copies because I remember the day Amazon locked me out of my account for a day and I couldn’t read anything Kindle even from the library. I am just waiting for better weather and working around it as best I can.
It’s been hot this last week for us too and not cooling down much at night, but today and tomorrow the temps have dropped sharply and it’s supposed to rain tomorrow because of Hurricane Hilary. We won’t get the full impact of it, thank goodness, but some rain will be nice. A game night sounds fun!
That scallop recipe sounds really good! Are you going to post it in your recipe tab?
I have an e-ARC of Burning Justice. Hope we both love it!
Thank you Rachel. I already read Burning Justice and I liked it. I always want more dog training and work in any book with a K9. There’s am interesting mystery plot. I hope in a couple weeks it will be just more normal weather and not excessive. Right now I just plan around the worst of it to do yard and garden work. I can put the recipe up there this week I guess. I think the original recipe was for 4 but I cut it back to 2 servings.
You don’t have to trouble yourself posting the recipe if it’s not handy! 🙂
I don’t cook much these days – I’m hoping to get back to more of it when I’m better, but I’m also a recipe tweaker and it’s always amazing when you discover a dish you really, really enjoy:)). We might be having rather a lot of rain at present – but I don’t envy you your heat and humidity. I hope you have a good week, Anne:)).
Thanks Sarah. I wouldn’t mind more rain, at least it would be cooler I think, but maybe just more humid. The dogs wouldn’t like it though. I never met a recipe I could leave as original. I pretty much always fiddle with them.
Oh game night sounds fun! And Lulu is looking exceptionally cute this week.
Thank you Samantha. Lulu is always at her best. We really enjoyed the game night and I look forward to going again.
Our weather is so up and down at the moment. Hopefully it cools down soon for you. I don’t like the heat. I recently read Tough Justice by Tee O’Fallon and I quite liked it, so I am anticipating the second book now too. Hope you have a great week.
Thanks Rolé. I don’t like the heat either. I’m more used to cold as I lived in Minnesota most of my life, very cold. The heat isn’t too bad here except when it pairs up with humidity which is going to happen some this week. I enjoyed Burning Justice. I hope you do.
Its impressive how much you get done even with the hot and steamy days. Your four-veg scalloped potatoes sounds tasty and fun that you guys got to learn a new game. Cute that your dog crew were happy to see you.
Have a great week, Anne!
Thanks Sophia. It’s odd to me how much all the neighbor dogs like us. We don’t give them treats (ever) or anything. But we do give them attention and maybe that’s the best gift. I work around the worst weather to do what I can.
I always enjoy seeing a picture of Lulu.
It cooled down here which My Falcor is happy about because it means we can go on longer walks. But it’s been rainy here for a few days. The remnants of Hurricane Hilary are heading this was as well. We’ll be getting rain for a while.
Thanks Mary. Lulu is what we photograph most. I feel badly when it’s a bit less walking but when it’s so hot it’s not happening at least not until later in the day and sometimes then I’m too tired for a longer walk if the day was too busy. We do have a fenced in yard where she enjoys chasing squirrels. She doesn’t really want to catch them, she just enjoys the chase. (I Know the difference because our last dog caught them).
It finally got hot today after being mild most of last week. The games night sounds fun. Hope you’re not too muggy this week. I was just talking to the neighbor and he’s keeping a close eye out since his cats go in and out, and there’s been an eagle and a hawk sighted in the area. One neighborhood cat was found dead, and they’ve been seen grabbing squirrels too.
In Minnesota when I lived on Lake Minnetonka there was a bald eagle in our backyard and I was always worried about Gina our 15 pound miniature poodle. We have hawks and owls here. It looks like now it will get up to 100 this week but the humidity is 40-50% which isn’t as bad as it could be.
I’m surprised the guy said there was an eagle around. Hawks I’ve seen, but we’re pretty residential here and I know there’s eagles up north but didn’t think we had them here.
I love SkipBo. We don’t play games every week, but do enjoy it a lot. We like to play with the neighbors (all the moms and the two daughters) when we get together to watch football games. This past week went by quickly. Friday the neighborhood group went to see some local comedians at the main beach. It was a lot of fun – I laughed so hard my cheeks hurt. I can’t believe school is almost here.
I love that you have those fun times with neighbors. I’ve never quite had that. We tried out Zombie dice last night two games and twice I rolled three guns which means you are dead and the game is over!
Glad you at least got some breaks from the heat and humidity. Also game night sounds like a lot of fun!
We liked the games. The heat is definitely here. But the humidity today is 40% which isn’t too bad. It’s only going to get hotter and more humid this week though.
I’m glad you’re getting breaks from the heat and humidity. Your recipes sound delicious! We’ve been playing a game called Crown which is has it’s own cards and is a lot of fun. Have a great week ahead!
Thank you Jodie. I haven’t heard of Crown but we used to play Courtwhist which had its own scoring sheets but used regular cards.
Your books look really good. I want to try Tee O’Fallon’s series. It looks good. I hope you have a great week!
Thanks Yvonne. I really like books with dogs and mystery thriller plots. The O’Fallon books are romantic suspense so there is a romance too.
We’re in the 90s every day and by Wednesday it will be 100+. I’m so ready for fall.
I’m with you Laura. It’s 90s this week and 100 by Friday. Today at least the humidity is low.
I rarely make the same recipe twice, I’m always fiddling with it and then forget to make note of the changes.
The game night sounds fun, I love board games but rarely have anyone to play with.
Wishing you a happy reading week, and cooler weather.
Thank you Shelleyrae! I often think I wish some of my online friends lived closer so we could talk books, or play board games or whatever, because they are real friends. I have favorite recipes I do make fairly regularly.
Hot and humid is such an unpleasant weather! Also I admire that you are requesting so many ARCs! I am a big mood reader!
Thanks Sophie. Well some things I might as well get the ARC if I can because I’m going to read the book. I can’t wait until this hot and humid are over since it’s going to get very hot this week.
I am so over the heat and humidity. But we have a long way to go for cooler weather here in FL. How fun to find a game night! Good way to meet people and try out new games. My mom comes over 2X a week and the three of us (including my husband) play Parcheesi each visit. We’re brutal. lol
We have so many games, so many. But we enjoy them. I just wish we got to play more. We are kind of trying to fit in a game each night after dinner now.
Always love seeing pics of Lulu! That sweet potato soup sounds good and game night sounds fun!
Thanks Jimjer. I like to try different recipes. Neither of us is much for spicy so I think something like rosemary or will work better for us than cumin. My daughter suggested sage but sage is a huge flavor. If I try it, I won’t use much. We are enjoying a few more games.
The sweet potato soup sounds really good though too bad the cumin didn’t work for either of you. Hopefully now that you know that you’ll find more things that you do like as cumin is in so many things. That’s awesome your daughter found her DS! I hope you’re both having a good week.
Thank you Katherine. I think rosemary or possibly oregano or sage would work in the soup. It was ok for me but my daughter had a bad reaction. Well this week hasn’t been as hot as I expected because the humidity has been lower, so that’s good. Tomorrow might hit 100 though.
