Everyone here is a liar, but only one of us is a killer…
A secluded cabin retreat
For GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton, McAlpine Lodge seems like the ideal getaway to celebrate their honeymoon. Set on a gorgeous, off-the-grid mountaintop property, it’s the perfect place to unplug and reconnect. Until a bone-chilling scream cuts through the night.
A murderer in their midst
Mercy McAlpine, the manager of the Lodge, is dead. With a vicious storm raging and the one access road to the property washed out, the murderer must be someone on the mountain. But as Will and Sara investigate the McAlpine family and the other guests, they realize that everyone here is lying….Lying about their past. Lying to their family. Lying to themselves.
Who killed Mercy McAlpine?
I have read all the Will Trent series and I’ve collected them all on audio over the past couple years. I even watched the TV show this year. It’s different but I liked it. The world and characters are so well developed. I know and love these characters so much. The narrator’s voices for them are so real to me . I think pretty much every book has violent crime, so if you are squeamish it may not be for you. I would read these books in order because of the character’s development.
Being that This Is Why We Lied is book 12 in the series, there will be some spoilers in this review. Starting with this book is the story of Will and Sara’s honeymoon. Sara planned the wedding and Will planned the honeymoon. They go to a remote mountain resort. It’s beautiful and their cabin is like a fairy cottage.
Quickly, the family who runs the resort show their nasty sides. They abuse the daughter, Mercy, who actually is running the resort and making it successful. That night they hear screams and find Mercy dying. The rest of their honeymoon is spent sorting through the deceptive and manipulative words of the family and other guests.
I enjoyed so very much the way Will and Sara and Faith and Amanda interact with each other. It’s so them. They all have their own ways and I love them. They are such good people who deal with horrible things with kindness and compassion, and sometimes disgust.
Every book in this series is excellent. I loved them all and highly recommend them if you enjoy this genre.
Narration:
Kathleen Early is THE narrator of the series. Her voices for the characters are distinct and I would recognize Will, Sara and Amanda easily, maybe Faith. The primary points of view here are Will, Faith and Sara, and Mercy. Both male and female voices were comfortable for me and I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

I can’t wait to get to this! Love seeing those stars, Anne💜
I can NOT express how much I LOVED this. It was just amazing.
This is a series that I have on my list to get around to eventually. I love that you like it in both editions and the TV Adaption.
Ah, a honeymoon murder case! 🙂
Maybe I should just break down and do a Read-long with a mystery series. There are so many I love and I’d love to reread this whole series in a year or two.
This is a series I really want to start. All the books in it sound so good. And so many bookish friends have told me how much they like Will Trent.
I just love the characters and how well they are developed. It isn’t cozy at all, pretty dark and gritty. I hope you love them as I do if you try them.
I like this author and really need to read this series. Your review is fantastic.
Thank you Kimberly, I love these and they give me all the feels. I think you would too. The narration is great too.
For some reason I’ve only heard of this series recently but I really want to try it and I want to read something from this author.
These are amazing with great characters but they can be very dark and gritty. You probably heard of them because there is a tv show now on Hulu. Will Trent is a beloved character for me.
She does write some pretty gnarly crimes! I love this series as well. I’m behind one book, but I just bought the last one on audio as it was on a Chirp deal. I’ll catch up. Love Will and Sara. I hate that she’s not in the TV series. At least, I haven’t seen her yet. I’m behind on the TV series, too.
ye! I’m behind on the tv series and no sign of Sara but I don’t think she was in the first book or so.
Maybe someday. I do adore this genre and I don’t read nearly enough
This would be at the top of my recommendations in this genre!
I have this on hold at the library, can’t wait! Only Will and Sarah will find themselves on their honeymoon with a murder to solve. Never a dull moment.
I love Will and Sara and Betty so much. Of course they did.
