I listened to The Beautiful Ashes as a “reread” right before getting The Sweetest Burn. I was able to get both in digital audio from the library. Now I was also able to finish the trilogy with The Brightest Embers, getting the audio at the library.
Ivy is a new adult. Somehow I expected her to be less whiny and at least, learn and grow throughout the series. I was excited to think she would build a team and they would work together to find the artifacts, while she and Adrian furthered their relationship as they worked together to save the world. Both Ivy and Adrian progress somewhat but I still found them to be rather childish and annoying. Their relationship continues with its ups, downs and protect each other through lies or omission behavior.
The other characters, Zach, Jasmine, and Kosta are barely developed. They revolve around Ivy and Adrian with limited impact. We do get the story about Ivy’s mother and how she came to leave Ivy.
Tavia Gilbert is Ivy’s voice to me. She felt right and comfortable in this role. I’m still uncertain about Adrian’s sort of Russian accent but I’m used to the voice for it now. The others were good, even with the limited amount they were in the story.
The search and save the world part of the plot took the scenic route, but with more of a map this time. Ivy shows more courage and determination in this round, in addition to her passion for the oppressed. Overall, I just couldn’t connect enough to these characters. Except Brutus, I love Brutus. I am glad to know this trilogy; I love this author, but I prefer some of her other series.

I read all types of books but my favorites are urban fantasy and romantic suspense.I like some romance and some action / adventure / mystery in everything.I like sex in my books but please, only between TWO people.Intimate conversation is equally important to the sex in a book.It lets me see the characters.The other thing I enjoy is humor.

I listened to all of the Night Huntress Universe titles and I enjoyed Tavia Gilbert’s narration for the most part – it definitely grew on me over the course of a dozen (plus?) books. However, I realized that I don’t love the stories – especially the Vlad spinoff books, so I stayed away from this series. Nice review.
I loved the Night Huntress series SO much. It was one of the very first urban fantasy series I ever read. I own it in paperback and then added it in ebook. I have the Vlad books on audio and ebook but have not yet read or listened to them. And I loved Vlad in the Night Huntress series. I’m not sure why I haven’t. You may have made the right choice for your. Thanks Jen!
this is on my list when I want to try something YA.
This is more New Adult than Young Adult as they have finished college but they do not always act mature.
I was not a huge fan of this series. I listened to the first two books. I let this release just slip right past me. I’ll probably grab from the library at some point. I’m excited for Ian’s book.
