To unearth a centuries-old secret, an archaeologist must team up with the rakish thief who’s stolen both an ancient relic and her heart…
Oh, is he handsome. And charming. And sexy as all get out. Dr. Lisa Maxwell isn’t the type to go home with a guy she barely knows. But, hey, this is Italy and the red-blooded Rafe Sullivan seems much more enticing than cataloging a bunch of dusty artifacts.
After being fully seduced, Lisa wakes to an empty bed and, worse yet, an empty safe. She’s staked her career as an archaeologist on collecting the three Furies, a priceless set of ancient Greek reliefs. Now the one she had is gone. But Lisa won’t just get mad. She’ll get even.
Romantic suspense is one of my favorite genres and it seems like romance books are the most prevalent free books, especially first in series books. I keep Goodreads shelves sorted by genre and source so when I’m in the mood for something hopefully I can find it. In the early days I didn’t use shelves as well or specifically, so older books like Stolen, first in the Stolen series, don’t always get found.
Luckily, it was easy to read and get absorbed in this action packed story. One thing about this genre is the urgency and danger and often some sort of forced proximity either for protection or in this case, Lisa and Rafe end up working together. They had skills the other needed. Treasure hunting requires thinking skills, money for equipment and travel, and some physical abilities. It also took them to beautiful and exotic locations.
Lisa and Rafe have both had disappointments in life and made a few questionable choices at times. However, they are both smart, skilled and good at heart. Luckily they both have family and friends who have their back, especially Lisa. Her twin brother, Shane was a strong and at times rather humorous character. Shane is a police detective in Chicago. Rafe has an ex-wife who is also on hand, and also a cop. I like that we get some of both Lisa and Rafe’s point of view.
Neither Lisa or Rafe is interested in a relationship, and they are more enemies who can’t trust each other anyway. But the attraction is undeniable. They come to respect each others skill and choices, as they learn more about each other. Danger finds them wanting to protect the other. The shocks and twists of the hunt, along with the sexy romance, make this a heart-stopping read.
These are only Kindle freebies I get, or ones through author newsletters which anyone can sign up and get for free. I don’t include things like Kindle Unlimited or Prime Free Reading (I do have it). Both Tantor and Audible have occasional free audios (to anyone) and I do include those. Since I one-click on 1-2 freebies a day or probably at least 5 a week, I came up with this feature to make sure I start reading them.
So I have thought about doing a Thrifty Thursday Challenge someday. For now, what I think would be fun is if you have read and reviewed a freebie, link up to your review (Goodreads, blog, facebook or wherever) below.

I thing I will read this one for the love and library readathon.
I liked it and it was different than my other current reads. I have the need to change it up in genre and tone. That way I never seem to get stuck and not want to read.
The magic of books is unique because they are portable
Well now they are really portable. Now that I have ebooks and audiobooks they are always with me.
Nice review. It does sound suspensful. I need to use my Goodreads shelves a lot better too. And organize my TBR shelf into more shelves.
I am constantly doing minor improvements to my Goodreads shelves. But they really work for me and I have exactly what I want.
That’s wonderful you enjoyed. It was a nice review.
It’s always a good thing when you find one that is really good. Thanks for sharing your review.
I didn’t label my TBR well in the beginning either. I recently went through my GRs shelves and weeded out a bunch. I enjoy romantic suspense a lot, too so I’ll keep this one in mind. Fab review, Anne!
Thank you. I enjoyed this one.
I think I’ve got this one as a freebie, too. Glad to know you enjoyed it, Anne!
Thanks Sophia. It’s one of my earlier ones so it feels good to get to it.
It’s been so long since I haven’t read a book in this genre but this one looks good!
I liked it and I got it for free.
oh yeah. this looks like it would be a good fit
There were many aspects I enjoyed and it was fun.
This is an author that I really want to read and this sounds like a great start to the series. Nice that you picked it up as a freebie!
Yes a freebie in 2012! All that daily clicking of freebies pays off and it’s all stored on Amazon. It’s at the library too.
