When two men kidnap former FBI agent Cate Wilde’s fiancé, the boldness of the crime rattles the community. Desperate to find the man she loves, Cate joins forces with the FBI and the local sheriff’s department to launch an investigation and bring Dr. Henry Powers home.
Cate soon learns that a brotherhood of bank robbers abducted Henry in the hopes that he might be able to save their youngest brother, who had been shot during a robbery. But this man is beyond saving, which spells life-threatening danger for Henry.
While Henry plots his escape, Cate uses her investigative skills and experience to track down her fiancé.
The Widow’s Island series is written alternately by Kendra Eliot and Melinda Leigh. Each book in the series are short, novella length. I would read them in order due to the personal relationships.
In previous books, Cate is an FBI agent who is injured and comes back to the island to stay with her grandma while she recuperates. While she is there, she gets involved with a new case on the island. She is on leave but decides to stay on the island to run the bakery / bookshop with her grandma and her new boyfriend, the island doctor.
Cate is settling into her new life, working with her grandma and planning for her wedding. Henry is at his medical practice and is abducted by criminals to help one of them who was shot. Cate and her friend, Tessa who is the local sheriff get right to work figuring out who took him. They learn enough to get Cate’s old group at the FBI interested.
Bone Deep is harrowing because these guys have killed and are fine with killing again. Henry does his best to save the man in an unrealistic situation without the right equipment or supplies. He cares but knows it is only a matter of time.
It’s exciting, fast-paced and there are plenty of little twists. I would say the blurb is a bit of a spoiler. I enjoyed it and am on to the next in the series.
Narration:
The narration has gone back to Christine Williams who was the original narrator. I found it easy to listen to her performance and the voices were appropriate. I listened at my usual 1.5x speed.

This seems like the perfect length for the story. It’s nice to add in novellas once in a while😁
The whole series is novellas with two MC by the authors alternating. They are pleasantly short but very satisfying.
Its good to know this was a satisfying read.
I really enjoy this series of novellas.
This caused such an adrenaline rush when I was reading it. Great review, Anne!
Thanks Sophia. They are great.
I like shorter books now and then , and this one sounds like it’s full of action.
It’s a great set of nice shorter stories that are nicely paced with plot.
I have been seeing this author all over the place, but need to pick her up soon, always looking for more solid suspense to grab up.
Great review, sounds like a nice paced plot to enjoy!
While these stories are short, they have the mystery, law enforcement action, and romance I enjoy.
This series and both authors that write for it are high up on my TBR. This sounds like a fun read!
These authors are favorites of mine. I hope you enjoy them.
