Sunday, I stayed up a bit later to finish a book, woke up at my earlier time, then fell back asleep. The temperature is a bit lower but the humidity a bit higher the next couple days. My daughter woke with a stuffy nose and sinus. It’s hard to believe I have been on Instagram a month roughly. I am just getting settled with getting all my posts and sales/deals shared there. I haven’t really looked at other people’s posts very much – sorry – but that’s the next phase. I’m growing bean sprouts. I’m surprised how much protein are in bean sprouts.
Monday, another hot day but bearable when I got out early to shovel and move more dirt. The tall raised bed is full and ready for planting. I added compost dirt to another backyard bed and more to the front bed. I’d say I have a third or fourth of it left. I still have garden currently planted which will need it. We walked the girls and it was a little warm. I ate a quick bite and then went out to the garden centers. I was able to get my lettuce and broccoli plants at the usual place. Then I got a chyrsanthemum at Home Depot. At another garden center, I got a couple clearance perennials. It was hot by now. I brought in the plants to plant later. I did some computer work. Before dinner, I put in the lettuce and broccoli in the new raised bed I finished filling with compost this morning.
I have lots blooming now: Toad lily, anemone, asters and chrysanthemum, azalea and gardenia, and a daylily.
Tuesday, the last day it is supposed to be so hot. We walk the dogs and my daughter goes back to sleep. I’m trying to catch up on reviews and setups. I went to pick carrots for dinner and it started raining. It wasn’t in the maps – I had just looked. After dinner, Lulu threw up on the sofa. I cleaned up and put the sofa cover and her blankets in the wash. Luckily, when I had the sofa reupholstered I had a separate cover of the same fabric made which I could take off and wash – because dog. Lulu doesn’t go on the loveseat or other chairs.
Wednesday, today will still be hot. Sigh. After walking, I made a run to Trader Joes and Wegmans. It’s not very close to us, but they are next to each other, so I only go once every 3-4 weeks. They both have some good produce and gluten free products I can’t find elsewhere. I was looking for some of their new gluten free stuff. I found most of it to try.
Thursday, finally we have cooler, around 80 which is a good 20 degrees less than last week. But the humidity today is medium high so I’ll be doing laundry and cleaning and indoor tasks today. After the walk, I trimmed Lulu’s nails. The fridge is chock full of leftovers so that’s what we will have tonight and tomorrow. Usually, I make new stuff every night and we have leftovers for lunch but we are behind.
Friday, finally the cool and low humidity. So today is dirtball day to do the yard work. I didn’t sleep well so I didn’t get going quickly. I blew leaves, mowed, trimmed and edged the whole yard. The leaves are along the back fence ready to go into the compost bins. I used the spreader to do weed n feed in the back yard and west side. I had to alternate tasks because my batteries needed charging which doesn’t happen often, but I had forgotten to charge one after using it last time. I have Greenworx for the leaf blower, trimmer and lawn mower. I have Ryobi for the edger. I moved more of the compost dirt into the front beds. I think I have just 2 wheelbarrows of dirt left which I want to use when I rotate crops in the other garden beds. I used a couple of tomato cages to prop up the toad lily and anemone since they were getting so tall and falling over. I got my daughter to walk Lulu. I watered everything a bit since some plants were new and there’s little to no rain projected this week. I was really stiff after dinner but I played one game with my daughter since we didn’t go to Game Night.
Saturday, another beautiful day. We will have nice weather around 80F / 27C with low humidity all week. There will be rain overnight on Sunday and then perhaps all next weekend. I went out to walk Lulu and ran into the neighbor with Abby so we walked together all the way to the pool and back. With the great weather, we were shocked the playground and tennis courts and pool were empty. Tomorrow is the last day for the pool this season and I haven’t gone there yet. I did some post setups and edits. I did the front and east sides with weed n feed. I made a batch of Lulu food adding in bean sprouts for more protein.

I really meant to cut back on freebies BUT they are free so I guess that won’t be happening.

You are planting and I am looking at cutting down, trimming and getting rid of the yard waste as autumn heads our way. Wish I could keep my hot peppers and green peppers going for some more months to come. Have a good week.
yes the 3 seasons of gardening are one of the things I love here. Some crops go 2 or even 3 seasons though. I mean the fresh herbs are year round. The chard and broccoli are nearly year round. Tomatoes and peppers I let grow summer and fall. But lettuce, snow peas, and spinach are spring and fall. I tried carrots this year and with some adjustments I think I can make 2 crops of them summer and fall. But I’m also gathering up leaves from the trees, now I need to leaf eat them which chops them up into small pieces for the compost bins.

Thank you Tammy. I just got the idea to try to grow them since we eat them almost every week. I think it will take some work to figure out the best methods. They also seem to be a bit of work to wash and prepare for eating.

Thanks Jonetta. yes Lulu is doing awesome. She loves her walks and neighborhood friends. It’s a lot of freebies but I was very selective and took many less than I used to take.
We had cooler mornings all last week, but by afternoon evening, it would be up to the 80s. This week I think we might be getting cooler weather? I hope. Have a great week!

Thanks Sarah. It’s good for me to get outside and work. I do the easiest perennials though. My herbs are almost all perennial except basil, and I’m adding asparagus and rhubarb later this month which will also be perennial. It’s taken me a bit to find the floral perennials which do well because it is very different than Minnesota. Of course, daylilies are stars anywhere. I love the Kate Shugak series and have been reading it for many years. I’ve read that freebie but I might do a reread one day so I thought I might as well pick it up. I got them from the library and later Netgalley. The audio versions are awesome – I read a few that way after 2015.
Don’t worry Anne, I haven’t looked at a lot of other people’s posts either! Work…
I do what I can but it takes me a bit to ramp up on a new social media and I have too many now. But it’s hard to give up platforms where I have a bunch of followers.

I’m not much of a veggie gardener; I’m all about the flowers and I’m still tweaking my garden as I learn what does well in my soil and temperature. It’s a fun process (but can get expensive if I guess wrong on a plant). I always enjoy browsing through your freebies – you choose a variety of genres. And, I’m always a little surprised to see we rarely have any of the same ones……we must be choosing from different lists. 🙂 Have a terrific week Anne.

Thanks Terrie. I am learning about NC after living in MN. There are so many freebies they aren’t all on a list. I post deals daily on Facebook, Insta and Mastodon. Some of them are only the one day so they aren’t free any more by Sunday.
Your flowers look wonderful! It seems like all the flowers are doing better now that the heat isn’t as intense with the season changing. I want to grow anemones. I should look and see if they have any here in the garden center. I haven’t seen any so I’d probably have to order. I didn’t sleep well last night either. Too many things on my mind.
I love Trader Joes but they’re like 30 min away from me now so I don’t get there as often as I like.
Thank you Rachel. I was able to buy anemone plants here. They should do well there. I could get them in MN but the frost often killed them quickly, same with Toad lily varieties. It’s a good 30 minutes to Wegmans and Trader Joes which are next to each other and I go every 3-4 weeks. They have some gluten free products we can’t get anywhere else.
Another busy week. Hope Lulu is feeling better. Yep, couch covers are a must with pets. It has been raining here all day on and off with no storms and it is barely 70. I am loving it! Trying g to get my weekly amount of It by King done for the week. Hope you and your daughter have a great week!

When my gran was alive, sprouts were a staple on the family menu and they still feature in a lot of the extended family cooking and some other dishes. Way to go getting your new dirt sorted into the beds and some fall planting done. Your flowers are so pretty. We have a slip cover on our couch so pets can enjoy the cozy seat, too. 🙂

Thanks Greg. I like bean sprouts in stir fries. My daughter is also putting them in pho soup. And now I’m adding them to the dog food which is also a stir-fry of sorts. I used to eat alfalfa sprouts on sandwiches. The weather is just so great now, every day goes by too quickly.
That sounds good. I’ve never had the soup. I’m finding as I get older I appreciate fresh food so much and also discovering the wonderful variety of Asian foods.

It’s been cooler here but still humid and it is affecting my son’s sinuses as well. Blah. Your week sounds great! I need to get into my garden and put it to bed. I have plans to completely redo everything differently next year. We will see!
Well I have to get in the final things for the fall crop soon or it will be too late. But some of the summer crop is still producing.
You always amaze me with how much you do in a week. Because of health reasons, I have to curtail all the fun things, especially outside, that I used to do. I love living vicariously through your pics.

I am always so impressed by your vegetable gardening and how much of your food you are able to grow. I love Trader Joe’s but, like you, do not have one very close by. If I’m on that side of town I always stop in. I love their specialty items – things you don’t find anywhere else. I picked up Hold Me Now by Croix, too. I’ve read one other by her and enjoyed it.
Thanks Tanya. I had a BLT with fresh tomatoes for lunch today. It’ll be another month before the fall lettuce will produce. I need to get in the snow peas but the summer crops are still producing where I might put them. I read a couple by Croix and really enjoyed them so now I grab any of her freebies I can get.
Wow! You got a lot done last week, despite several hot days. It’s fun to see your blooms, since up here the only thing blooming are mums, and then the leaves fall. I don’t recall last week, but our weekend was good. I had a lazy day Saturday but did lots on Sunday and Monday. Luckily the hurricane bypassed us and we only had some light rain and big waves. In fact, we had way more rain yesterday than from the hurricane on Saturday!
I did manage to do some things last week and this week when it is so beautiful I’m lazy. I did it last week. I do need to finish fall planting but some summer crops are still producing so not sure when I will do it. We are getting rain on the weekend and next week though. If you had asters or anemone or toad lily they would bloom now too. I had all of those in MN but they got cut off by frost sooner than they will here.

I love bean sprouts and I love alfalfa sprouts. There was a time when you could get sprouts on your sandwich almost everywhere you went out to eat. Now I almost never see them on a menu. I wonder why?
I love having food and flowers. I only see them at more health food or old style deli places. The fast food deli like Subway or Firehouse don’t seem to have them. I’m glad to be growing my own. I could do alfalfa sprouts the same way if I get the seeds.
I remain impressed with your energy, especially when it comes to gardening! I just seem to wear out so quickly, particularly in the heat.
Thanks Kara. I’m determined to do certain things so I try to plan it for the best weather. It’s hard sometimes because July-August don’t give a lot of breaks. But I don’t need to do as much then as spring and fall.
