It’s all magical hands on deck for vampire Elisa Sullivan and her allies as they fight to save the Windy City from a supernatural onslaught, in the newest installment of the USA Today bestselling Heirs of Chicagoland series.
Elisa, the only vampire ever born, is hoping all can remain quiet in the City of Chicago in the wake of a destructive attack by an ancient demon who broke the city’s defensive magic. Still, she and her friends, including shifter Connor Keene, know they need to be ready for anything.
Everyone is working as hard as they can to repair the city’s wards, but unwelcome creatures are slipping through and Elisa soon finds herself caught in the middle of a magical turf war with roots that go back generations. She knows she will have to take a stand, but retaliating threatens to reveal her deepest secret...
The Heirs of Chicagoland series has come to a close with Cold Curses. I would read the series in order, like most urban fantasy. I’ve really enjoyed the next generation making their lives and fighting for Chicago with old and new foes. Elisa and Connor are settled and very comfortable in their relationship. They support and help each other. Connor is still facing pack challenges periodically. Lulu and Alexei are a newer pairing.
While Lulu enjoys her work as an artist, she does stand up to help this time. Demons seem to be everywhere, fighting residents of Chicago and other demons. All generations are all hands on deck in this fight. The Ombuds research to find out about the original wards as Catcher and Mallory try to repair them. They also try to figure out the demons. Elisa tries to reach out to Jonathon Black who might know something since he is also a sorcerer.
Elisa also has the worry of “monster” who wants out. Monster becomes more adamant when they go to Cadogan House from which they were separated from in the last book. Elisa and Monster have lived and worked together for awhile. Elisa is afraid to tell Lulu, her parents and Lulu’s parents. She is also worried about how much she will change without Monster.
The team of the Ombuds, their friends and family, and some of the other supernaturals work hard to take down demons and figure out how to stop them from causing destruction in the city. They did a pretty smart job considering how little information was available. There were a few exciting battles, more personal growth, and a satisfying conclusion for this well loved world and characters.

I’m excited to read this because I have loved this series for such a long time if you include the original Chicagoland Series…but I know it will also be sad since I know it’s the end of great series.
yes it’s hard to see the end of the world. At least, we got an extension with the second generation.
I can’t wait to read this one. I’ve enjoyed this entire series so much.
I hope you love it.
I’m so glad to see you enjoying the spinoff five books in, Anne💜 I still haven’t finished Chicagoland Vampires. One day…
yes I know that one day, someday problem.
I never did read this or the original series – will she do another spinoff? I did enjoy the Devil’s Island series – it was so different and interesting.
I don’t think she will do another spinoff but who knows? I was glad to have this one.
I got a novella from this series way out of order since I haven’t even read the original series, but it was a nice teaser and made me want to get to them all. I’m glad it ended on a high note for you.
I thought it was very well done for a spinoff series of the next generation and conclusion to it.
I loved Neill’s Devil’s Isle trilogy, but I haven’t read any of the books in her Chicagoland series. Yet. 😀
I hope you get to try the Chicagoland series. Who knows – maybe I’ll do a Read-along. It’s been about 8 years since I read it. It was one of my very first audio series I read.
I am looking forward to reading this book. Hopefully soon or at least early in the new year. I have enjoyed the earlier books. I am sad it’s coming to an end but am glad to hear it has a satisfactory ending.
I hope you enjoy it Wendy
This is one I’d like to try. Do you like this series as much as Kate Daniels or Mercy Thompson?
I would look at the series as both the first one and now the second generation. I really like it but not quite at the level of those 2. The 2 you picked are my absolute favorite favorites though. This still rates highly and I do own all the audiobooks for the original series. I don’t buy them if I can get them at the library unless I think they are worth rereading.
This sounds like one heck of a series so far.
This is the end of the spinoff series. The original series is longer, both series are good to read.
