On a hot August night, Lt. Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke, speed through the streets of Manhattan to the Down and Dirty club, where a joyful, boisterous pre-wedding girls’ night out has turned into a murder scene. One of the brides lies in a pool of blood, garroted in a private room where she was preparing a surprise for her fiancée—two scrimped and saved-for tickets to Hawaii.

Despite the dozens of people present, useful witnesses are hard to come by. It all brings back some bad memories for Eve. In her uniform days, she’d suffered an assault in the very same room—but she’d been able to fight back and survive. She’d gotten justice. And now she needs to provide some for poor young Erin.

Eve knows that the level of violence and the apparent premeditation involved suggest a volatile mix of hidden, heated passion and ice-cold calculation. This is a crime that can be countered only by hard detective work and relentless dedication—and Eve will not stop until she finds the killer who destroyed this couple’s dreams before the honeymoon even began…

I love the  In Death series.  I am always so happy to have a new book in this series.  The characters have become beloved to me, and their circle of friends with comfortable connections. The smart way the police work the cases and try to get a vision of what happened and what makes sense is always exciting.  In addition to the case, I enjoy the personal growth of the characters.  There’s nothing realistic about the stories but the characters’ emotions.

Every book in this series is a comfort read. Because I love the characters.  Passions in Death is #59 and I have read every one.  The combination of a police procedural with great characters and world building is a winner for me.  There is a bachelorette party or “hen” party of sorts and one of the brides is murdered. It’s heart breaking because the couple was SO happy.  The victim was a wonderful person, an artist with talent.

I watch as Eve goes through suspects, motives and takes a stand for the victim to get justice.  More than many other installments, this is a study of characters and getting at the motive.  It isn’t as simple and the evidence is limited.  Eve tries on different suspects and checks facts to see if they work, and figures it out.

Along with the case, we have the wonder of Eve with her marriage.  She notices how other couples interact like Mira and Dennis,  Mavis and Leonardo, Crack and Rochelle, and reflects on how nice it is to be married.  I would say the pace here is slower and the story is more people-oriented than action-packed.  It’s still a triumph when the law prevails.

About J. D. Robb

With a phenomenal career full of bestsellers, Nora Roberts was ready for a new writing challenge. As her agent put it, like Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and caffeine-free Pepsi, a pseudonym offered her the opportunity to reach a new and different group of readers. The first futuristic suspense J. D. Robb book, Naked in Death, was published in paperback in 1995, and readers were immediately drawn to Eve Dallas, a tough cop with a dark past, and her even more mysterious love interest, Roarke.

The series quickly gained attention, great reviews, and devoted readers. Since the debut of Loyalty in Death (the ninth In Death book) on Halloween 1999 on the New York Times bestseller list, every J. D. Robb title has been a New York Times bestseller. While fans had their suspicions, it wasn’t until the twelfth book in the series, Betrayal in Death (2001), that the publisher fully revealed that J. D. Robb was a pseudonym for bestselling powerhouse Nora Roberts. Unmasked, Nora Roberts fans who hadn’t yet picked up one of the Robb books were quickly playing catch-up.

Robb’s peers in the mystery world are fans as well, with accolades for the In Death series from such blockbuster authors as Stephen King, Jonathan Kellerman, Dennis Lehane, Kathy Reichs, Lisa Scottoline, Janet Evanovich, David Baldacci, Harlan Coben, Robert B. Parker, Ridley Pearson, Linda Fairstein, and Andrew Gross.

The In Death books are perpetual bestsellers, and frequently share the bestseller list with other Nora Roberts novels. J. D. Robb publishes two hardcover In Death books per year, with the occasional stand-alone original In Death story featured in an anthology.

Over forty books and fifteen years later, there is no end in sight for the ever-popular In Death series.
