I’m enjoying the X-Ops series as they release on audio, as I’ve always wanted to read them. I haven’t been reading too much PNR lately but this feels like romantic suspense with shifters. There is a new couple in each book. So you could read them out of order, but I wouldn’t. I’m enjoying how the world and characters continue to develop.
An overview on the shifters in this world is they do not change completely. Their eyes change color and they may grow claws. They always have more strength, better hearing, healing and sense of smell than humans. They are born into human families and have just slight genetic differences.
Kendra has been one of my favorite characters and now we have her story. She’s smart, hard-working and caring. Finally, John is letting her go into the field on what was expected to be a simpler mission. Of course, things go to hell and they run into huge numbers of hybrids.
Declan had been attracted to Kendra the whole 7 years he has been in the DCO and thought he was finally getting over her. Then he ends up on a mission with her, and they get separated from the rest of their group in a fight to survive.
I enjoy their smart ways of hiding and protecting themselves. It also give Kendra and Declan a chance to work together, spend all their time together and get to really know each other. They find they are really very compatible and things get hot, even with their terrible conditions.
Declan has always hidden his shifter characteristics and the only times he has revealed them, things went very badly. But Declan will need to embrace all his shifter abilities to save Kendra in Her Wild Hero.
I love how the characters and their relationships progress throughout the series. The circle of friends also is expanding and strengthening. Each book has a another couple and their romance, along with a current mission. But there is also an overall series storyline about what is going on in the DCO. The action is fairly constant, either battles or sexy times!
Narration:
This series is my first experience with Holly Adams. She really is the voice of the series. She does well with both male and female voices. Kendra was the key character throughout and we get her flow of thoughts, also. The narration really enhanced my enjoyment. I listened at my normal 1.5x speed.

It’s really been awhile since I’ve read a shifter story. Glad you enjoyed this! ?
I’m really enjoying this series which is what I classify as PNR. But it feels like romantic suspense and while there is romance and sexy times, there is also real plot and an overall story arc in the series which is interesting. I think it is well written.
I haven’t read much PNR either lately so I’m intrigued that this feels more like RS. I got burned out on the genre and am now itching to get back to it. Great review, Anne?
Thank you. I have had similar feelings. This series is more interesting than the typical PNR romances.
This is right up my alley. And what a killer cover!
It is and one would say the cover look is not realistic but IT IS. They are in the jungle in Costa Rica and have lost most of their clothes and what they have has been torn and damaged. Maybe not as neatly as on the cover but it’s somewhat accurate. Fighting for survival in the juggle with tattered clothes and big guns.
What a great review. I LOVED this book so much, There is something so compelling about this author’s writing style. And this circle of friendships that built is just beautiful and Paige Tyler is a master storyteller in that.
Thank you! I really am enjoying this series. The narrator is great too.
