A captivating tale of humanity pushed beyond its breaking point, of family and bonds of love forged when everything is lost, and of a heroic young woman who crosses a frozen landscape to find her destiny, this debut novel is in a post-apocalyptic tradition that spans The Hunger Games and Station Eleven but blazes its own distinctive path.

Forget the old days. Forget summer. Forget warmth. Forget anything that doesn’t help you survive in the endless white wilderness beyond the edges of a fallen world.

Lynn McBride has learned much since society collapsed in the face of nuclear war and the relentless spread of disease. As the memories of her old life continue to haunt, she’s been forced to forge ahead in the snow-drifted Canadian Yukon, learning how to hunt and trap and slaughter.

But her fragile existence is about to be shattered. Shadows of the world before have found her tiny community—most prominently in the enigmatic figure of Jax, who brings with him dark secrets of the past and sets in motion a chain of events that will call Lynn to a role she never imagined.

Simultaneously a heartbreakingly sympathetic portrait of a young woman searching for the answer of who she is meant to be and a frightening vision of a merciless new world in which desperation rules, The Wolves of Winter is enveloping, propulsive, and poignant. (

I saw this as an audible daily deal, thought it sounded good, and went right to the library to request it. Time passed and by the time I started listening I didn’t remember what it was. So I was happy to discover The Wolves of Winter is amazing.

The setting is in Canada, the Yukon, where Lynn and her family group live a subsistence life. They hunt, fish and grow a few things. The world building is excellent with a blend of the current and the information about their life before.   Many of Lynn’s memories are about her father, who died of the flu before they moved here.

One day, a stranger shows up and it’s the first time they have seen anyone else in 7 years, except for their one neighbor who Lynn doesn’t particularly like, with good reason. Lynn is excited for Jax to stay with them, to learn more about the rest of the world. Jax is reticent, with good reason.

I won’t spoil the rest of this mystery, action and adventure, because it is an exciting journey. Lynn learns a lot about herself and her family, developing into a capable adult. I truly hope there will be more of this world but it is unknown at this time.

Narration:

I listened at my usual 1.25 speed and it was great. This was my first experience with Jayme Mattler and I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to her again.  I loved the sound of the voices, especially the main character, but I thought the male voices were well done. The performance was so good I could just get lost in the story which is the way it should be.

  1. Hmm, I think I vaguely remember seeing it on the daily deal on Audible, but for some reason just thought it was a Wolf shifter thing-which is not a bad thing but I have to many already. This sounds good. Is there a romance at all or is she too young?

    • I know right? I thought it was about wolf shifters after I forgot about it while I waited for it to be available at the library. But it’s scifi. She is in her 20s, but when you live in the middle of no where with your family, there are no real romantic options. There is the start of a romance at the end though. Thanks for visiting.
